Wrexham legend thrilled to welcome star released this summer back to club for Reading coverage

A Wrexham icon is excited to have a star who was released this summer return to the club for coverage in Reading.

Twenty players left the Racecourse Ground in the summer of 2025, with Eoghan O’Connell being the final player to go after the deadline. When Wrexham announced in May that eight players would be departing on June 30 when their contracts expired, the exodus officially started. Formerly important players like Mark Howard and Steven Fletcher have moved away, and the former is still without a new team. In a social media message, Howard announced his departure from Wrexham, implying that he was leaving to pursue more consistent first-team play.

Over the summer, Howard became a permanent member of Salford City in League Two, serving as their backup goalie. However, this week saw the return of the former Wrexham hero, who played a significant part in their most recent promotions before injuries struck. For the first time since the 1970s, the Dragons were competing in the Carabao Cup with the goal of securing a spot in the fourth round. Ultimately, Wrexham defeated Reading 2-0 and advanced to the round of 16.

Howard and club legend Andy Morrell covered the Dragons’ match. Since then, Morrell has commented on the keeper’s comeback on Instagram, expressing his hope for a major cup matchup in the upcoming round. “I love @Wrexham_AFC Match Day Live and Co-comms right now,” he added. Having @Yoursmineaway as a guest is a great addition. Like King Howard walking the touchline! “A strong second half as well! Please, big team at home.

Howard is the North West team’s second choice, however he departed Wrexham in pursuit of more consistent play. During the Carabao Cup match against Rotherham United, the goalie made his debut and played the entire game, which finished in a 3-2 penalty loss. Later, earlier this month, Howard started as Salford defeated Paul Mullin’s Wigan Athletic 2-0 in the EFL Trophy. The 39-year-old defeated Tranmere 3-2 in his lone League Two game this season.
