Norwich City director abstains as Ipswich Town given replay

The director of Norwich City does not attend when Ipswich Town is replayed.

Following the cancellation of the first encounter between the two teams at Ewood Park due to a wet surface, the Blues will repeat their match against Blackburn in its entirety. After 79 minutes, Ipswich was reduced to 10 men with the dismissal of Jacob Greaves, and Rovers took a 1-0 lead thanks to a penalty kick by Canaries midfielder Todd Cantwell. Webber is seated on the board that discussed the possible outcomes following the abandonment, which included awarding Blackburn three points, replaying the entire match, and playing the rest of the match as is. However, the City employee and her two fellow Championship directors decided not to vote in the final decision.

“The board thoroughly examined all available options in compliance with the regulations along with the representations made by both clubs,” the EFL stated in a statement. “A majority finally determined that a full replay of the match was necessary. The decision is meant to preserve the integrity of the league competition, which should, whenever feasible, be based on a full set of contests played until the end of the day. It follows recent precedents regarding abandoned fixtures.

“The three Championship directors abstained from voting after giving it careful thought. “The board recognised that this was an incredibly difficult decision and agreed to consult clubs on the best approach to the development of new guidance to be considered in the event of a match abandonment.” Cantwell’s goal will not be included in goalscoring records, but Greaves, who was sent off in the 49th minute of the first game, will still be suspended for one game.

In a little more than a week, Norwich will play their fiercest rivals in the first East Anglian derby since Marcelino Nunez, who is now with Ipswich, scored the lone goal in a match at Carrow Road in April of last year. With matches against Stoke and West Brom prior to their matchup on Sunday, they are looking to prolong their 16-year winning record in the derby.
