Colchester United: Tom Flanagan keen to sign new deal

According to Tom Flanagan, he would be content to stay with Colchester United for the upcoming campaign.

After joining from Shrewsbury Town in July of last year, the 33-year-old defender was the U’s second-highest

outfield appearance maker in the 2024–25 season.

Several players at Colchester have contracts expiring this summer, including Flanagan, a former Northern Ireland

international.

The U’s captain is keen to accept a new contract if one is provided and stay at the JobServe Community Stadium for

the upcoming season, though, as the team is anticipated to reveal their retained list next week.

“I wasn’t entirely certain that I was going to enjoy the season when I started,” Flanagan stated.

“I’m definitely motivated to play again, and I felt inspired to play for another season.

“I was really considering finishing when I was in the same situation at the close of the previous season.

Dan and Nick are aware that I don’t want to put any pressure on the club or run an advertisement, but I do want to

go again if they will let me.

“If they want me, I’m pleased to stay, but I’m not pursuing a contract.

There will be some people staying and other individuals going when we depart in the summer.

Personally, I thought the season was good, and I’m smiling when I think back on it as a whole.

“I’ve played in seasons before where you leave and are relieved it’s over, but this one wasn’t like that—I’ve had a great

season.”

According to Flanagan, Colchester should be pleased with their League Two performance this year.

The U’s barely lost out on a play-off position on the last day of the season after finishing tenth in the division.

The former Sunderland and MK Dons centre-back stated, “I hadn’t been at the club before this year, but from where

the club has been to where we’ve taken it as a group with the management and everyone behind the scenes, I think

we’ve got a lot to be proud of.”

“The stadium attendance, flags, and banners have been fantastic as we’ve been there for the past 12 weeks or so. The fans have truly supported us.”

“We had it in our grasp at one point, so disappointment is the main emotion.

We finally failed by giving ourselves a little too much work to complete early in the season.

“We just missed out, but it takes a little while to recruit as many people as we did.”
