Norwich City were once inspired by Huddersfield Town success – They hit the jackpot in a big way

The Canaries made a brilliant choice when they hired a Borussia Dortmund reserve team manager in the summer of

2017 in accordance with the model set by Huddersfield Town.

David Wagner was hired as Borussia Dortmund II coach by Huddersfield in November 2015. After consistently

finishing in the lower half of the Championship, the Terriers achieved their first promotion to the top division of

English football during the Premier League era around eighteen months later.

Stuart Webber was appointed Director of Football at Huddersfield in the summer of 2015 after serving as Head of

Youth at Wrexham, Director of Recruitment at Liverpool, and Head of Scouting at Queens Park Rangers and

Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After having a key role in bringing in Wagner and the team assembled to earn promotion to the Premier League,

Webber left Huddersfield in April 2017 to take a position as Sporting Director at Norwich in Norfolk.

His first managerial move was to appoint Dortmund’s second coach in order to finally get them promoted to the

Premier League in their second season, which was the same as his first managerial move at Huddersfield.

The Wagner & Farke comparison

Before being hired by Huddersfield, Wagner, a former United States international, had been leading Borussia

Dortmund II from the beginning of the 2011–12 campaign and was largely doing little noteworthy to advance

Dortmund’s junior team.

Before a Webber-led German-focused recruitment drive in the summer brought in players like Christopher

Schindler, Michael Hefele, and Chris Lowe, among others, the Terriers helped to stabilise the ship a little during his

first season in West Yorkshire. They shocked many by being promoted to the top division in his second season.

Before relocating to England in the summer of 2017, Daniel Farke succeeded Wagner as Borussia Dortmund II’s

manager. Along with players like Christoph Zimmermann, Marcel Franke, Tom Trybull, and Marco Stiepermann,

Mario Vrancic, a Bosnian-Herzegovina international, arrived from Darmstadt as part of Webber’s once again

German-focused hiring strategy.

Farke guided Norwich to the first of two Championship crowns under his leadership following a solid debut season,

with the Canaries scoring 94 points in the 2018–19 campaign and 97 points in the 2020–21 campaign.

Norwich have been promoted to the top-flight on nine occasions in their entire 123-year history and two of those

promotions came within the space of three seasons thanks to Farke.

Farke’s career since Carrow Road

Farke had a break after being fired by Norwich in November 2021 as they battled to return to the Premier League.

He was then hired as Krasnodar’s manager in January 2022, but he left two months later, citing the Russian invasion

of Ukraine as his reason.

He spent a season in charge of Borussia Monchengladbach in the 2022/23 campaign as they finished tenth before

moving to Leeds United the following season and narrowly missing out on automatic promotion in his first year

before a play-off final defeat to Southampton.

Unlike many sides and managers, despite having several key players sold such as Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter and

Crysencio Summerville, Farke was able to get Leeds back on track and they eventually won this season’s

Championship title with 100 points, meaning his current win percentage at Elland Road is 58.65% over 104 games in

charge.

Webber brought a manager to Carrow Road who would give them some memorable second-tier campaigns after

being inspired by his own successful decision at Huddersfield. Now, as they enter another summer searching for a

new manager after Johannes Hoff Thorup was fired, Farke appears to be set for another season in the top division of

English football.
