Tony Pulis tells Middlesbrough what their summer transfer priority should be after major problem

The former Middlesbrough boss identified a key problem for Middlesbrough this season.

Tony Pulis believes Middlesbrough’s top summer objective should be to improve his squad’s spine, after losing a significant number of points from winning positions this season.

Boro’s dismal overall season saw them finish tenth in the Championship, losing out on their goal of making the play-offs. As a result, a thorough evaluation is underway to ensure that critical changes are implemented for next season.

There were other factors that led to Boro’s struggles this season, but dropping points from winning situations was undoubtedly one of them. Boro failed to win ten games in which they were leading (five loses and five draws), resulting in a total loss of 25 points. Michael Carrick recognized to himself that it was simply too much.

With one eye on the summer transfer market, former Boro manager Pulis told OLGB: “I don’t have the stats, but I think Middlesbrough have thrown away so many leads in games they’ve won this season.” It’d be fascinating to see how many points they’ve lost from their winning position. So Michael Carrick would have to check into that.

“Then being a little bit critical, maybe that strength down the middle of the pitch, that real solid strength to see you through the games. For Middlesbrough, keeping hold of leads would be the thing. The team’s backbone runs down the center of the pitch. To stay in winning positions, you must have a really strong core.”

Boro recruitment personnel have already identified the five essential areas they want to strengthen during the summer transfer window. Boro appear to agree with Pulis’ assessment, as both centre back and midfield are on their wishlist.
