An icon of Blackburn Rovers considers the golden age and significant shifts.
With almost 50 goals during his tenure at Ewood Park, the South African striker was a major fan favourite. After a brilliant time at the turn of the century, he has established himself as a ‘Barclaysman’ for his exploits with Rovers, who are fully committed to that trend themselves.
McCarthy still has a great deal of regard for Rovers, who gave him his Premier League debut. McCarthy won the Champions League with Porto and later played for West Ham. The people that were knitted into the club’s fabric were what made it so unique and successful during that time, as several former players from that era have stated. He said on The Added Time Podcast, “I have a lot of love for Blackburn; they were my first club when I came to the Premier League.”
“It was an unforgettable moment. I fell in love with England because of the wonderful people that worked at the club. “Their fan following is amazing. They were so unique because of the wonderful people that surrounded the club. “It is what it is because of those on the front lines. It’s unfortunate to see them in the Championship at this point. They are having trouble figuring out how to return to the Premier League. “After switching managers, they finished barely outside the playoffs the previous season, so there is always hope. I’d be thrilled to see them return to the Premier League.Rovers’ strategic hiring and consistency allowed them to outperform over the majority of the early 21st century. Due to their size, they had to sell players, yet they would always be replaced, as Brad Friedel recently documented. As the team grew, it meant they could keep pushing themselves and draw in players of a higher level. McCarthy went on to say, “They were stable, they had top players coming to play for the club,” “Blackburn has my eternal gratitude for it. We consistently placed in the top 10 during my tenure there. They were a well-managed team that was incredibly reliable and stable in the league.
“We were able to sign Michael Salgado from Real Madrid to play for Blackburn. If they hadn’t been so reliable and consistently in the top half of the Premier League, that wouldn’t have occurred. “Blackburn as a whole attracted players who wanted to play there. You no longer see that now. I don’t recognise anyone when I see them now. “I really hope they can get it together and get themselves back into contention in the Championship to be in the Premier League.”
