An ex-Norwich City player joins an EFL team; Reading FC, Rotherham United, and Portsmouth were mentioned.
Following their 2023–24 relegation from League One, Cheltenham had a disappointing bottom-half finish the previous season, which has continued into this one.
After a sluggish start to the season, the Robins are battling their way into the relegation zone in League Two, but things might be about to start improving for them. This is because they defeated Fleetwood Town by two goals to zero at Whaddon Road last weekend, thanks to goals from Josh Martin and Isaac Hutchinson, earning them three huge points. After starting his professional playing career with his hometown club, Steve Cotterill became a well-known manager, and this was his first game back in control of the team. In addition, Cheltenham has seen significant off-field changes in recent weeks, with former Burnley chairman Mike Garlick eventually taking charge of the team. Alongside such adjustments, Cheltenham has now concluded the ostensibly spectacular acquisition of Jonathan Tomkinson, who hasn’t had a contract since the summer. Jonathan Tomkinson, a centre-back, has officially joined Cheltenham on a free transfer. According to earlier reports, League One teams Reading, Rotherham United, and Stockport County, as well as Championship team Portsmouth, had expressed interest in Tomkinson. Tomkinson joined Norwich City in 2019 after graduating from FC Dallas’ MLS academy. He joined the Canaries as a professional player in 2022 and played in the Canaries’ academy for the bulk of his Norwich career. He earned three first-team appearances for the team in three seasons.
He played 13 games in the Scottish Premiership last season while on loan at Stevenage, Bradford City, and Ross County, respectively, during those three seasons. As Cheltenham looks to distance themselves from difficulty in the fourth division, the former United States youth international is considered a coup. Steve Cotterill, the former manager of Bristol City, is back at Cheltenham and has to turn around a failing ship.
But his coaching and managerial skills, along with an off-field makeover, have given the Gloucestershire spa town fresh hope. They made several outstanding recruits towards the end of the window, including the aforementioned Hutchinson on loan from Bristol Rovers, but their summer business was frustrating and comparatively quiet. Town needed to improve the quality throughout the park, and Tomkinson should add more talent and experience to the team as they try to avoid an unwelcome and unforeseen return to non-league football.
