A former Portsmouth defender is negotiating for his first managerial position as Southampton decides to pay £7.4 million for the loanee.

For fans eager to get their Pompey dose, the second international break of the season is already underway and there is hope. After defeating second-place Middlesbrough prior to the two-week break, John Mousinho’s team will play the third-place Foxes at King Power Stadium in another difficult test. There are many rumours circulating about Pompey and their Championship rivals outside of Fratton Park.
Charlie Daniels, a former Pompey defender, is vying for his first management position. The 39-year-old is one of the potential applicants for the position with League One team Blackpool. He is now Watford’s U21 coach. The Blackpool Gazette, our sister publication, reports that the former left-back is in talks with the Seasiders to take Steve Bruce’s place at the helm of Bloomfield Road.
Earlier this week, before Jack Wilshere was appointed, Daniels was also a candidate for the position of head coach at Luton Town. This was in addition to the Cardiff City opening in the summer before Brian Barry-Murphy took over. Along with Paul Cook’s old Fratton assistant Leam Richardson, the Watford coach is one of the bookies’ favourites. The current front-runners are Ian Evatt, Matt Bloomfield, and Richie Wellens. The former Bournemouth star ended his playing career in January 2022 and went into teaching, where he is still very successful at the Hornets’ Vicarage Road academy.
After signing with Kenny Jackett in January 2021, Daniels had a dismal six-month stint at Fratton Park. The 39-year-old made 18 appearances during his tenure on the south coast, including starting in the EFL Trophy final loss to Salford City at Wembley. It has been reported that Southampton would not attempt to use their £7.4 million clause in order to sign loanee Elias Jelert. According to Football League World, the Saints have already made it clear that they would not exercise the Dane’s option to purchase during the January transfer window.
