McKenna: Town owners 'will have learnt a lot' from Premier League relegation - Yahoo Sport

Kieran McKenna, Ipswich Town manager, believes the club’s owners will have ‘learnt a lot’ from this season’s Premier League relegation.

After a 22-year absence, the Blues quickly returned to the top flight following a US takeover in April 2021 and additional American investment in March.

Despite spending over £125 million on transfer fees over the past two windows, the Blues were still relegated with four games remaining.

When asked if the club’s owners had enjoyed their taste of the big time and still had the same enthusiasm, McKenna replied, “Yes. I believe Mark (Ashton, chairman) is better suited to answer these questions.

“But we have great owners and investors. It’s not just about the money; it’s about the support, clarity, and calm that they provide. They are an excellent ownership group that supports us in every way.

“They probably feel the same way as many Ipswich fans, players, and staff members. The season has been enjoyable in many ways, but we all wish we had won more games. They, like everyone else involved in the football fiasco, will have learnt a great deal.

“The club aims to build and rebuild an established Premier League football club, building on the progress made in the previous three years.

“I’m sure they have taken a lot from this season, as we all have.”

The Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System funds the original Gamechanger 20 Ltd takeover group, led by Ed Schwartz, which owns 50% of the club.

Bright Path Sports Partners, a US-based private equity firm, owns 40% of the company, while smaller investors, including Suffolk superstar Ed Sheeran, hold the remaining 10%.

Last July, Schwartz stated that there were no plans to sell the club, despite a multi-million pound infrastructure investment. He stated that the club aims to be a long-term success in the Premier League. That is certainly our goal.”
