Sheffield Wednesday “new owners in charge” prediction made amid Chansiri protests.

Chansiri protests

In recent seasons, Sheffield Wednesday fans have grown increasingly frustrated with owner Dejphon Chansiri, leading to off-the-pitch issues as well as on-pitch ones.

While no formal takeover has yet occurred, some believe that change is finally on the way.

FLW’s Owls fan pundit Patrick McKenna admits that predicting whether Sheffield Wednesday will have new ownership by next year is the most difficult question to answer.

“I have really had to think on this one,” said Patrick. “My gut feeling is that, yes, new owners will be in charge. Chansiri’s fate appears to be sealed on Wednesday. However, I do not expect any takeover deal to be completed anytime soon, nor will it be drawn out or messy.

Patrick criticised the current owner for perpetuating a misguided narrative about his intentions for the club.

“Chansiri continues to spread the false narrative that he loves the club and only wants to sell it to someone he believes is worthy of it. Which is completely ridiculous.

Wednesday’s financial struggles and fan pressure may force a sale.

Patrick believes Chansiri’s financial struggles may finally lead to a sale, which many supporters have been anticipating for some time.

“He should have sold by now. It makes no sense for him to be hanging on. He has to throw money at the club every month just to keep it going, and he has a difficult time doing so every year,” he explained.

“There have been consistent issues with player wages, so at this point, he needs to start listening to offers and selling it at a reasonable price. However, I believe that the issue of a reasonable price could be a significant stumbling block in negotiations. What Chansiri thinks he should get for the club is not the same as what he actually gets.”

Patrick highlighted the potential for change through fan protests and new EFL regulations.

“If we can keep the protests going and the pressure on, even though he keeps saying he doesn’t like protests, we might be able to force a sale.” Hopefully, the new EFL measures will put pressure on him, as it is clear that he cannot run this football club.

Patrick believes that despite difficulties, the ownership chapter under Chansiri is nearing an end.

“I believe by next year, his time at Wednesday will be over. But it will not be a quick and easy process.”

Pressure continues to build on the pitch.

Danny Rohl in charge of Sheffield Wednesday vs Sheffield United

Wednesday’s off-field issues have been long-standing, and the club may soon lose head coach Danny Röhl, one of its most valuable assets.

Speaking to Football League World last week, Patrick hinted that the German head coach could leave Hillsborough this summer.

“I can see him going to a bigger club in the future and right the way to the top of the game,” he told reporters.

“But Southampton is the club that came in for him in December, so they were interested in him. They didn’t want to pay the release clause, but it will be reduced this summer. Danny Röhl will know his time at Wednesday is over.

“He has taken us as far as he can, and he isn’t prepared to work under Chansiri any further,” he told me.

In his first managerial role, the 36-year-old orchestrated an incredible relegation comeback, lifting a struggling side out of the bottom three in the final weeks of the 2023/24 season before leading them to a mid-table finish in this one.

Fan unrest and escalating issues under Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership continue to fuel calls for change, and while fan pundit Patrick predicts an eventual exit, he does not expect it to be easy or clean.

Meanwhile, on the pitch, the potential departure of head coach Danny Röhl, who oversaw the club’s remarkable turnaround, represents yet another impending transition for the Owls.
