EFL expert urges Cardiff City to capitalise on big Hull City, Ruben Selles development

Since the beginning of 2021, Riza has been Cardiff’s seventh permanent manager and the most recent victim of the club’s regular turnover under contentious owner Vincent Tan. The decision to fire Riza was, of course, widely accepted. At the time of his temporary introduction into the dugout, Cardiff was in too dire and damning a situation for interim manager Aaron Ramsey to realistically save the team, with three games remaining.
Ahead of the team’s first third-tier season in over two decades, it is imperative that the next appointment is made correctly. Salford City manager Karl Robinson was connected to Cardiff, and the club’s top international sports agency, Wasserman, was brought in to create a shortlist of applicants for consideration by the club’s leadership, which includes Tan, Mehmet Dalman, and Ken Choo.
In order to help halt Cardiff’s current trajectory and put them on track to return to the Championship on their first try, supporters are anxious to see the club’s frequent manager changes stopped. A more sustainable, ambitious, and progressive appointment is thought to be preferable.
In recent weeks, the fan base has seen popular candidates like Nathan Jones and Des Buckingham, but one name is suddenly gaining traction as the ideal next manager to take charge of the Welsh capital, according to many.
After taking over when the Tigers were in the relegation zone when he arrived at the MKM Stadium from Reading in December, Cardiff was urged to take advantage of Hull City’s contentious decision to fire head coach Ruben Selles just after he secured survival on the final day by goal difference.

Selles, who reputedly was a candidate to take the Cardiff position before coming to Hull amid the club’s quest for a successor to Erol Bulut, should be the first choice in Tan’s opinion, according to both supporters and commentators.
Speaking before Selles’ dismissal was formally announced on the most recent episode of the Not The Top 20 podcast, EFL expert George Elek echoed this opinion by explaining how the Spaniard’s success with Reading under difficult off-field circumstances and his style of play would make him a top choice for the Bluebirds.
“The one manager I think has to be looked at is Ruben Selles, who, reports suggest, is soon to be sacked from Hull,” Elek stated.
“He performed admirably at Reading. There are probably not many managers in the entire nation who performed as well as Selles.
“He had to bring through young players from the academy who were perhaps not ready for first-team football since he was joining a League One team that had a points deduction and was unable to buy any players for a large portion of it.
Before he took a chance at Hull, where he took over a team in the relegation zone, he provided safety following that points deduction and then had them in extremely difficult circumstances on the verge of the play-offs. He brought them to safety, albeit it was close.
“He’s brilliant, he plays a really aggressive out-of-possession style of game, and there’s no way Hull City should be looking to move on and they should’ve learned from their error last year with Liam Rosenior.
“Now, Selles is certain to have supporters both inside and outside of the Championship. But in my opinion, he would be better off joining a team like Cardiff that has a respectable budget and is hoping to deliver promotion rather than returning to another team that is fighting firefighting and saving relegation.
As far as Cardiff is concerned, that should be considered a very alluring factor.
“I’d be amazed if the hierarchy at Cardiff aren’t looking at Selles. I think he looks like the outstanding candidate for so many jobs that are open right now.”
“It might be ambitious, it might be difficult, but they have to consider him.” Although it was forced upon them due to Reading’s shabby squad and inability to complete transfers, Selles demonstrated an impressive ability to work with, manage, and progress young players during his time at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
