“Interesting” – Exclusive: Sky Sports pundit reacts to Norwich City, Pep Lijnders news

The Canaries are looking for a new manager after firing Johannes Hoff Thorup in April after a miserable run of one victory in eight league games.

According to John Percy of The Telegraph, Lijnders, who was Jurgen Klopp’s go-to assistant at Liverpool for almost ten years, is scheduled to speak with Norwich. He has a strong taste for success in the nation, having helped the Reds win two League cups, one FA Cup, and a Premier League trophy—not to mention the Champions League.

However, Lijnders’ solo management hasn’t gone as planned; after only a few months in charge, a brief stint at Red Bull Salzburg came to an end. Actually, he only won 13 of a potential 26 games, which won’t motivate many considering how dominant RB Salzburg is in Austria.

Points per game 1.77
Win Percentage 50%
Avg goals scored per match 1.88
Avg goals conceded per match 1.27

Although Lijnders has some experience from his time at Liverpool, the former Aston Villa midfielder thinks he would require significant financial support if he were to succeed at Norwich.

“He’s been linked to a lot of jobs, hasn’t he? And obviously, working under Jurgen Klopp, I think he’s stated that he does want to go into management and he wants to give it a go,” Hendrie said in an exclusive interview with FLW. I think it’d be a great football club for him to maybe establish his personality, his style, his approach.

As we’ve seen with Maresca, it’s acceptable to join a football team after working under a top manager, but I believe that having the foundation, the team, and the players to handle that makes your decision much easier. Therefore, I believe that Norwich will likely need to invest, or give him an idea of investing and bringing in players of his calibre that he can work with.

“It will be intriguing to watch because if they clearly offer him the chance to add better players, they will also lose players, so that would be the intriguing one because people like Sargent and Sainz, likely to leave, so you’re essentially looking at a rebuild, bringing in new players, and that will encourage him to seize the chance.”

Hendrie stated that the possibility of important players leaving Carrow Road this summer would entice the Dutchman to accept the position, giving him complete control over the opportunity to assemble a team as he sees fit.

It appears more likely that top players like Josh Sargent, a USA international, and Borja Sainz will leave. The former stated that he is “very happy” in NR1, but after scoring 15 goals in the Championship this past season, a summer transfer is still possible. This might offer Lijnders a really great budget to deal with.

Hendrie’s perspective suggests that Lijnders could be a good fit for Norwich if given all the right recipes for success.

After working closely with a world-class manager like Klopp, there must be something in him, and he does have an impressive trophy cabinet, whether he is an assistant or not. Only time will tell if Norwich decides to pursue Lijnders further after their discussions.
