Sheffield Wednesday: Danny Rohl among final two contenders for managerial vacancy

Sheffield Wednesday enters the summer with the specter of managerial uncertainty still hanging over them. SWFC manager Danny Rohl has been associated with a variety of positions.
Clubs throughout the country and across Europe are looking for new managers, and Rohl’s good work and unclear future at Hillsborough have seen him cited as a candidate for a variety of positions.

The Southampton role will be vacant ahead of their Championship return, and after being considered as a potential Russell Martin replacement in the winter, Rohl is firmly back in the running as they attempt to fill the void created by Ivan Juric’s departure.

Following persistent rumours, a new report from Sky Sports claims Sheffield Wednesday manager Rohl is one of the two final candidates identified by the Saints as they consider their next job.

Along with SWFC’s Rohl, the highly rated Will Still is looking for a position in the Championship after leaving RC Lens to be closer to family in England.

As has been well known, Rohl has a sizable release clause in his Owls contract, but it is increasingly probable that he will go.

Clarity needed at Sheffield Wednesday

Clarity and stability have been things Sheffield Wednesday fans have lacked for some time, and as the summer approaches, there are still worries about the club’s future path, particularly the managerial situation.
Rohl has been linked to various positions all year and has indicated that his future lies elsewhere toward the end of the season. However, official word from the club has yet to arrive, and it is unclear whether there will be any.

SWFC may not openly address his future until a club comes in and triggers his release clause. As Southampton narrows their managerial search to the last two candidates, one of which is Rohl, such a situation may not be far off in the future.

Destined for bigger things?

Rohl’s remarkable performance at Sheffield Wednesday has earned him a spot among Europe’s top young coaches. He has become a popular figure among supporters for his work under difficult circumstances, but the persistent speculation about his future and noncommittal responses to questions about a possible leave have soured some fans’ opinions of the boss.

Nonetheless, the German is a highly regarded coach, and it appears like his next job will be a significant advancement. He may progress to a higher level, but if Southampton swooped, he would remain in the Championship.

However, the Saints have significant financial resources, and their goal will be to return to the Premier League at the first opportunity, which is a far cry from SWFC’s goals and expectations.
