Exclusive: David Prutton backs Wrexham AFC to seal “solid” Cardiff City double deal

Fresh off achieving promotion to the Championship, Wrexham are keen to get their transfer business underway to best prepare themselves for the task at hand next season.

Ambition and success have seeped within the veins of the Red Dragons over the past few years, something the club will be desperate to continue during life in the second-tier.

A recent report from Wrexham Insider has stated that Phil Parkinson’s side are interested in raiding recently relegated Cardiff City, with the manager particularly fond of duo Isaak Davies and Ollie Tanner.

Sky Sports pundit and ex-EFL midfielder David Prutton commented on the situation exclusively to Football League World, and believes that securing the pair could be a solid bit of business for Wrexham.

“Offers something different” – David Prutton weighs in on Wrexham’s interest in Cardiff City duo

1-3

“I think the consensus with Davies is that he’s a striker that offers something different to the likes of Steven Fletcher, who are moving on from Wrexham,” explained Prutton.

“I think Ollie Tanner and the position he plays, he’s more effective as a winger, whereas you’ve got a Wrexham side that don’t set up with out-and-out wingers.

“So there are question marks about how often he would be utilised. I think solid’s probably the word to describe the deal.

“Any players that have been part of a squad that has gone down in the manner that Cardiff City did, there’ll be a lot of soul searching. It depends on the business model, the finances available to Wrexham with regard to who they recruit.

“Solid is a good way of describing these players because first and foremost, it will be a season of consolidation for Wrexham.”

A move for Davies makes sense, Tanner less so

Isaak Davies Cardiff

Heading into the Championship, Wrexham will need to upgrade on the likes of Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer and Steven Fletcher in forward areas, so a move for Davies makes sense.

The 23-year-old forward managed two goals from nine Championship appearances, although much of his campaign was curtailed by a serious hamstring injury sustained in pre-season, having been tipped to lead the line for Cardiff following a 12-goal haul on loan with Belgian side Kortrijk in 23/24.

Blessed with electric speed, the young prospect is covered in potential and will be backed to have a leading impact in League One next year for the Bluebirds if he remains at the club.

Tanner, however, could prove an awkward fit in Parkinson’s formation. He is an out-and-out winger, capable of playing on either flank, and while Tanner has been deployed as a wing-back on occasion, it’s not his natural position.

Therefore, it would require Parkinson to restructure his entire system to accommodate the winger – which doesn’t seem likely.

Although Tanner could adapt his game to fit into Wrexham’s team, the Red Dragons’ resources would be better spent on someone who naturally suits the manager’s system.

As a result, it may work out better for Wrexham to take just one forward from their recently relegated Welsh counterparts and resist the temptation to relieve them of Tanner too.
