Bruno Fernandes could face awkward reunion amid Man United transfer links

According to recent speculations, Bruno Fernandes and Emiliano Martinez may have an unpleasant reunion at Old Trafford this summer. After saying goodbye to Aston Villa fans with tears in his eyes, the 32-year-old goalie has been linked to a move to Manchester United.

At Villa Park on Friday night, Unai Emery’s team easily defeated Tottenham Hotspur, earning three vital points in the battle for UEFA Champions League qualifying. Martinez, who has four years left on his deal, recorded his eighth Premier League clean sheet of the year and his 15th of the season.

The Argentina international seemed to say goodbye after the match by giving the home crowd heartfelt applause. Since then, the Sun has revealed that Caoimhin Kelleher has been shortlisted by Aston Villa, who are looking for a new goalkeeper.

The future of the Liverpool goalkeeper is questionable because Giorgi Mamardashvili will be joining Anfield this summer. According to the Sun, United is keeping an eye on Martinez’s circumstances at Villa Park, although they will have fierce competition from Barcelona to sign him.

The Saudi Pro League has expressed interest in the Argentine as well. Martinez might have an uncomfortable reunion with Fernandes at Carrington if United were to sign him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blasted the Aston Villa goalie and his teammates in September 2021 for taunting the United player prior to a penalty. Prior to Fernandes taking his spot kick, Martinez prodded Cristiano Ronaldo.

He missed because the Argentine’s theatrics were successful. Then Martinez did a little dance and made fun of the home crowd at Old Trafford. Kortney Hause defeated David De Gea in the closing minutes of the match as Aston Villa won 1-0.

In an interview with Ian Wright and Oriana Sabatini on Behind The Game a few years later, Martinez recounted the events leading up to his run-in with Fernandes:

“I saw Ronaldo disappointed for not taking it, and I thought there is tension here. I said, ‘Come on, you take it now. He (Ronaldo) doesn’t want to shoot.

I said to Cavani, ‘Why is Ronaldo not shooting?'” Martinez, who was seen bouncing up and down and swaying side to side on his line, credited Lionel Messi for his tips, adding: “It’s not even trash-talk.”

“I cause mayhem. The game was in the 92nd minute, and because they had everything to gain, I needed to divert his attention in some manner. He didn’t skip a pen for twenty-five pens or anything, Bruno.

“When I asked Messi, he said that people don’t enjoy it when you walk around the place like that. I wasn’t dancing because I wanted to. I never did that. That just came out in the moment, and I’m not sure how to handle it now.

“The strikers stated, ‘We pick a spot,’ and they can put the ball in the position because of their quality. So if you’re moving around so you generate confusion, actually we perceive different areas.”
