Kieran Scott has been the head of football at Middlesbrough since September 2021.
Kieran Scott is unlikely to sign a new deal at Middlesbrough, despite national media reports to the contrary – mostly because there is no need to.
According to a story over the weekend, Boro will offer their head of football a new contract as a show of faith in the recruitment specialist. The study comes as the club conducts a season evaluation and determines its future orientation. However, Boro insiders have downplayed the contract news, however it is anticipated and expected that Scott would stay at the club this summer, given previous interest from Premier League clubs.

Scott will not be given a new contract because he is not on a fixed-term contract like players and coaches, which means his time at the club is limited. Scott, like the majority of other football club employees, is on a permanent contract, which means he has no set expiration date and will work until either the employer or the employee terminates it.
This is common practice in the league, and Scott joined Boro from Norwich City in September 2021. Scott’s arrival was announced a month earlier, but under the terms of his Canaries employment contract, he was required to serve a month’s notice period and thus arrived after the summer transfer window had closed.
Scott would only require a new contract at Boro if his role or its duties changed, which is unlikely. As the club conducts its post-season evaluation, Scott is expected to have Steve Gibson’s support in continuing to supervise football operations on Teesside, as well as any changes that are agreed upon following the reviews.
Since his arrival at Boro, Scott has overseen a massive transformation of the club’s recruitment team and strategy, which has massively improved the club’s financial picture in a difficult post-Covid landscape. Scott and head of recruitment Chris Jones have overhauled the scouting team while being tasked with finding gems and value for money in the market, with player trading a key factor in ensuring the club complies with PSR while maintaining.
In adding players like Emmanuel Latte Lath and Morgan Rogers, who have made the club significant profit in recent years, as well as the likes of Finn Azaz, Aidan Morris Tommy Conway and Rav van den Berg, who will have a higher market worth than they signed for when they leave, Scott has received praise from both club officials and most fans.
However, with Boro’s primary goal still being promotion to the Premier League, part of the club’s analysis will involve ensuring they strike the correct balance in terms of recruitment. Scott will be eager to get back to work this summer on his goal of building a squad capable of competing for a top-six berth next season, especially after a difficult January transfer window.
