Huddersfield Town are searching for a new permanent head coach as they prepare for the 2025/26 League One season.
Following their relegation from the Championship last season, the Terriers were unable to mount a successful promotion push in the third division, finishing tenth, 14 points behind the play-offs.
Michael Duff was relieved of his duties in March, with the club just outside the top six, before interim manager Jon Worthington oversaw two wins and eight defeats in ten games to round off the season.
Huddersfield Town’s last five results
---
Huddersfield 1-4 Leyton Orient
Exeter 3-1 Huddersfield
Stockport 2-1 Huddersfield
Huddersfield 1-2 Cambridge
Burton 3-0 Huddersfield
As a result, it is not surprising that the club is currently looking for a new permanent head coach ahead of next season, with promotion back to the Championship undoubtedly the goal for the 2025/26 season.
David Wagner was reportedly offered the chance to return to the John Smith’s Stadium earlier this month, according to journalist Alex Crook via his X account, and while nothing has yet been confirmed, with other names in the running, the German would undoubtedly be worth serious consideration given his previous success at the club.
Lee Hendrie urges Huddersfield to pursue Wagner

Sky Sports analyst Lee Hendrie talked exclusively to Football League World about Huddersfield’s rumored interest in Wagner, claiming that the German may be the right man to lead the club out of League One.
“Should Huddersfield Town do everything they can to hire David Wagner? He knows the football club well, doesn’t he?” Hendrie spoke.
“He returned to the English game recently. He has clout, he knows the football club well, and I believe that someone like that is needed to reinvigorate the club. I really do.
“It needs something like that to give it a kick and nudge forward, and I believe selecting him is the appropriate decision. Will they get him? That’s the big question.
“I believe that getting managers to drop down to League One is a difficult task, but it definitely checks a lot of boxes for him. He understands what the football club is about, so he may return there and revive its success.”
