Boyd: Gerrard ‘ticks a lot of boxes’ but Rangers unsure who they want.
Steven Gerrard led Rangers to the Premiership title in 2021 before moving to Aston Villa; various options are being considered as the Ibrox club works to appoint a new manager. Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers plan to take over the Gers in the United States.

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd believes the club hasn’t decided on the next manager, but Steven Gerrard would be a good choice.
Steven Gerrard’s return to Rangers “ticks a lot of boxes,” but Kris Boyd believes the club still doesn’t know who they want as their new manager.
Former Rangers manager Gerrard has been linked with a return to Glasgow, three and a half years after leaving to take charge of Aston Villa.
Gerrard, who led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021, has been out of work since leaving Saudi club Al-Ettifaq in January.
According to Sky Sports News, Gerrard and Real Madrid’s David Ancelotti are among the candidates being considered for the role.
Russell Martin, a former manager of Southampton, Swansea, and MK Dons, is also under consideration.
In-demand Danny Rohl, ex-Luton Town manager Rob Edwards, and former Bournemouth and Wolves manager Gary O’Neil have been linked to the position.

While Kris Boyd sees the benefits of former Liverpool captain Gerrard returning, he doesn’t think the club has a preferred candidate.

Boyd, a former Rangers striker, told Sky Sports News that Rangers require someone who understands the pressures and demands of the role.
“Steven proved his ability to do so in Glasgow for three years. He can handle it because he’s had it his entire life.
“I believe that many coaches and managers will be afraid to take the Rangers job due to the pressures and demands that come with it.
“You need someone who can deal with the pressures of the day, bear the burden of the football club, and propel it forward.
Gerrard was at Aston Villa for less than a year after leaving Rangers“Yes, [Gerrard] checks a lot of boxes. His previous backroom staff included Michael Beale, who returned to Rangers as manager, but that did not work out, so he would need to change everything, I believe.
“I believe there is a long way to go in determining who will be the Rangers manager.” I know they’ve spoken with people and gone through a long list, but it changes every day.
“I don’t think the Rangers have made up their minds. A lot of people are guessing who will be the next manager.
“There’s nothing really coming out of the club, or from people who should know.
“I don’t think Rangers have worked through that list and got to the person they want right now.”
Rangers’ Other Options

Davide Ancelotti, Carlo’s son, has worked for his father at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton, and Real Madrid.
With Carlo joining Brazil next week, Davide, known by incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell, aims to become a manager in his own right.
The 35-year-old had been linked with Como in the event of Cesc Fabregas’ departure. However, the former Arsenal captain will remain with the Italian club.
Davide could assist his father in Brazil’s friendlies against Ecuador and Paraguay early next month, but it is believed Paul Clement will be Carlo’s assistant.

Martin is also a familiar name to Rangers fans, having played for the club in 2018. He has been out of work since December. Meanwhile, Edwards, who previously worked with Thelwell at Wolves, could be a viable option for Gers.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Rohl has also been linked with the Southampton job, but with Will Still in the running at St Mary’s, the 36-year-old could still make the final shortlist.
While various options are being considered, Thelwell, Stewart, and the rest of the Rangers’ management team will want to appoint the 20th permanent manager as soon as possible.

Rangers will resume pre-season training in June ahead of their Champions League qualifiers at the end of July, with the new Scottish Premiership season beginning in the first weekend of August.
Appointments will not be delayed pending the completion of the US takeover.
A US consortium led by health insurance tycoon Andrew Cavenagh and including the San Francisco 49ers investment arm, 49ers Enterprises, is expected to acquire a 51% stake in Rangers by early June.
While the takeover is ongoing, the club is reportedly planning for next season behind the scenes as it considers player contracts and potential transfers.
