Latest on Leicester City interest in Sheffield Wednesday boss amid Ruud van Nistelrooy revelation

Sheffield Wednesday are enveloped in frustrating uncertainty following a successful 2024/25 season. SWFC experienced another tumultuous year, but they made significant progress on the pitch.
Hailed for his part in bringing the Owls to a mid-table finish after last year’s relegation fight has been Danny Rohl. The Germans improved their 2023/24 campaign, finishing 12th on Wednesday.
Rohl has developed as one of the game’s top-rated young coaches, but it has sparked interest from abroad. Numerous other clubs have been connected, and the 36-year-old is poised to leave Hillsborough.

Leicester City has expressed interest in the Sheffield Wednesday manager, and Sky Sports has provided an update on the Foxes’ managerial position.

According to reports, Dutch manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is expected to leave the club at the end of the season, with talks beginning next week. Until he has resigned though, the relegated team will not proceed their new manager hunt out of respect.

However, they have two primary targets: Russell Martin and SWFC manager Rohl.

The cons of a Championship switch

Sheffield Wednesday would not want to lose Rohl in an ideal world, but with a departure looming, they may be hoping he does not join a Championship competitor.
Not only would it be painful to see him in the opposite dugout, but the German’s release clause is reduced by half if he joins a Championship team rather than a Premier League one. It is unclear whether this applies to all top level leagues, but Bundesliga sides have also expressed interest in Rohl.

It would imply that SWFC would not only have to deal with the emotional trauma of confronting their former leader, but they would also earn less financially from the change.

Contingency planning a must at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday haven’t really been a club for forward planning under the lead of Dejphon Chansiri. Questions have been asked for some time over the running of the club, but recent managerial departures have been met with fairly swift appointments in recent years.

When Darren Moore left in the summer of 2023, he was replaced by Xisco Munoz just over two weeks later. After the Spaniard left, Rohl came nine days later.

If the present leader steps down, Chansiri must ensure that a suitable alternative is in place to take over soon. They have time on their side now that the season is over, but the sooner a new manager can take over, the sooner they can begin working with the players and looking for fresh signings.
