Romelle Donovan ends Brentford loan ‘relieved’ before Birmingham City transfer call

Birmingham City youngster Romelle Donovan has spent the second half of the season on loan at Brentford B

Romelle Donovan finished his season with a trophy after lighting up the Professional Development League Cup final for Brentford.

The Birmingham City prodigy has spent the second part of the season on loan at Brentford’s B team, having returned to the Blues following an unsuccessful spell at League One Burton Albion.

Donovan has occasionally played for the Bees’ under-21 team, which defeated Bournemouth 3-2 in the National Final at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday evening.
With the scores tied at 1-1, Donovan charged into the middle of the pitch before slamming the ball into the roof of the net from 20 yards out to put Brentford ahead.
Donovan remarked, “We’ve worked all season for this, so I’m relieved that we now have a trophy.

I just picked it up on the half turn, drove to the edge of the box, thought, ‘Let me just hit this’, and the rest was history.

Donovan has scored eight goals and made a great impression during his loan stay with Brentford, setting up an exciting summer.
While neither club disclosed an option-to-buy clause in the loan agreement, the move was intended to allow Brentford, who have long admired Donovan, to take a closer look at the 18-year-old before deciding whether to spend money on him.

The Blues were pleased to unload Donovan after Chris Davies decided not to integrate him into the first team when he returned from Burton midway through the season.

Davies made it apparent that Donovan would not be included in his plans, adding, “He’s not really in my thoughts. He’s a young guy who needs to continue developing at his own speed, and we can help him with that, but I wouldn’t say he’s in the first-team picture.”

If Donovan does not join Brentford this summer, Davies’ opinion is unlikely to change now that the Blues have been promoted to the Championship.
