Town manager Kieran McKenna has stated that Ipswich has allowed striker Liam Delap to consider his options for the next campaign.
The 22-year-old, who moved from Manchester City to Ipswich last summer, is anticipated to depart the Suffolk team after they were demoted back to the Sky Bet Championship after only one Premier League season. The England Under-21 player, who reportedly has a £30 million relegation release clause in his contract, has been linked to big-money moves from Manchester United, Chelsea, and Newcastle.
McKenna stated in a news conference prior to Sunday’s last Premier League game against West Ham, “I think Liam has the right to look at his options for next year, and we support him with that.” We may have let him to do it this week, I believe. It’s a crucial choice for his future.
Naturally, there is a great deal of interest, and with good reason. Having some of those chats has probably been a part of his week.
Almost every team in the league is interested in him, and I doubt many clubs in the world wouldn’t want to have him. It appears more than probable that he will move on this summer.
“That process will take its course, though, as nothing has been resolved, nothing has been done, finished, or even very, very, very close.”
“We will take pride in the role that we have played in Liam’s growth and his contribution this season,” McKenna continued.
We will be thrilled if he stays with us, and if he leaves this summer, it will be excellent for the club to have produced and sold a player of that caliber, and hopefully it will be a wise decision for him as well.
Despite Delap’s 12 Premier League goals in 36 games this season, Ipswich was unable to prevent a quick drop down to the second division.
But according to McKenna, Delap never demonstrated anything but complete dedication to Town’s struggle for existence.
The Ipswich manager stated, “He has dedicated himself fully to the cause and has the right to decide what he believes is best for the future.”
“I believe the fans will remember some of his performances and some of the wins he helped lead with a lot of love in the future.
“I firmly think that everyone will be cheering him on and following his career, even if it isn’t at Ipswich.”
Massimo Luongo, a midfielder, will be departing the team this summer when his contract expires, McKenna said.
Defensors Cameron Burgess and Axel Tuanzebe are still in talks about perhaps staying at Portman Road for the next campaign.
