‘Tough to take’ – Chris Wilder makes Sheffield United admission after Sunderland heartbreak

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder believed his team was too ‘loose’ in the second half against Sunderland and accepted that it will take some time to recover from the defeat.

The Blades got off to a strong start with a superb goal from Tyrese Campbell, and they believed they’d doubled their lead when Harrison Burrows rifled into the back of the net shortly after. However, VAR had other plans, and it was eventually deemed offside.

Eliezer Mayenda equalised in the second half before Tom Watson, who will depart the club for Brighton & Hove Albion this summer, scored a thrilling winner in injury time, leaving United to rue their squandered opportunities earlier in the encounter.

Wilder expressed his unhappiness with the timing of the winner, but he also took time to thank the Black Cats and his French counterpart, Regis Le Bris.

Chris Wilder congratulated Sunderland.

“It will take a long time to recover for the players, the staff, and, most importantly, the supporters. “There were some things we could have done better in crucial moments,” he told Sky Sports later.

“Congratulations to Sunderland, the manager, and their players for their success this season and promotion to the Premier League. It’s a difficult one to swallow from our perspective; there were defining moments throughout the game.

“I never felt in danger, even in the second half, and they obviously needed to open up to get back into the game. We needed to improve turnover, but didn’t strike the appropriate mix between screening Kieffer Moore and playing out of the back.

United’s previous victory at Wembley was in the 1925 FA Cup final, and today’s setback means that their 100-year wait will continue.
