After firing 36-year-old Dane Johannes Hoff Thorup, who took over from FC Nordsjaelland less than a year ago, the Canaries have been searching for a new manager since April.
Supported by majority owner Mark Attanasio, City’s future sports director Ben Knapper must be the perfect choice because the team finished mid-table in the Championship in 2024–25 and hopes to return to the Premier League as soon as possible.
Norwich City set to approach Bristol City for manager Liam Manning

First-team coach Jack Wilshere was ruled out early in Norwich’s exhaustive manager search, and the former Arsenal midfielder later left the Canaries.
After weighing their alternatives, they are now looking to Manning as their new manager. The shortlist had been down to former RB Salzburg manager Pep Lijnders, who was once Jurgen Klopp’s assistant at Liverpool, and former Norwich midfielder Gary O’Neil.
Norwich will make a proposal to Bristol City for the 39-year-old on Monday, as initially reported by BBC’s Nick Mashiter. John Percy of The Telegraph has revealed that the compensation amount for his services will be about £800,000.
Bristol City are set to feel exactly how Oxford United felt with Liam Manning
Additionally, according to Percy, Manning will meet with Norwich’s management later this week to work out a contract to return to his hometown, with Bristol City apparently unable to stop him from doing so.
Given that he joined the Robins in similar circumstances from Oxford United in 2023, this is not the first time Manning will have left a position while still under contract, if discussions come to a successful finish.
Manning had only been with the then-League One U’s for three months when they were promoted at the conclusion of the season under Des Buckingham, but he was pleased to leave, although sensibly to join a higher-level team.

However, given that Bristol City finished in the play-off positions and Norwich was a good distance behind them at the end of the day, Manning would be joining a Championship competitor in what could be seen as a downward move.
The Robins supporters will be really disappointed, but they will probably have to move on and continue to grow without him since that’s just the way football works sometimes.
