After denying substitute Camille Lafaix a chance to score by dragging her back in the 79th minute, City defender Sam Van Diemen was sent off, but the game was already over and the Sky Sports Cup champions were guaranteed a cup double.
Early in the game, there was a lot of movement on the woodwork.
After beating City goalkeeper Lee Gibson with a drive in the 12th minute, McAulay hit the post. Five minutes later, Rangers defender Kathy Hill headed a free kick over the bar.
Shortly after, Natalia Wrobel of City sent a shot from the edge of the box off the crossbar at the opposite end.
The second goal was assisted by McAulay, who floated a cross into Howat, who turned neatly away from Van Diemen before firing low past Gibson, who moments later stopped a third goal when she blocked a shot from McAulay who had broken free of the City back line.
Rangers, who lost captain Nicola Docherty to injury shortly after the first goal, had a healthy interval cushion. However, McAulay had another opportunity outside the box on a quick counter and drilled a shot into the far corner of the net after a quick counter.
After fifty minutes, Chelsea Cornet was able to pass the ball across goal for Howat to knock into an empty net from close range after City was again caught with a through-ball.
With only Gers keeper Jenna Fife to beat, City’s Nicole Kozlova somehow missed the goal in the 70th minute, and McAulay wasted a chance for her second when Howat set her up.
A miserable day for City was capped off by Van Diemen’s dismissal after referee Dan McFarlane was called by VAR to check his pitchside monitor after initially flashing a yellow. Meanwhile, in the final game of her illustrious career, 35-year-old striker Jane Ross came on as a late substitute for Rangers.
