This offseason, the Green Bay Packers must make a big decision. In 2022, the team signed star cornerback Jaire Alexander to a four-year, $84 million contract that seemed like a great deal at the time. Alexander was a two-time All-Pro and appeared to have a bright future in the league, but although he may still have his best years ahead of him, the 28-year-old has struggled over the last two seasons, playing in just 14 games and possibly at a crossroads in Bay.
If the Packers trade or release Alexander after June 1st, they will be able to save more than $17 million on the 2025 cap. As a result, there is a lot of conjecture that the team will be looking to move on from the two-time Pro Bowler and bolster its secondary this offseason. In the end, Moe Moton of Bleacher Report thinks the team ought to sign cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., a free agency. Despite having an injury-plagued 2024, the 25-year-old has generally been healthy during his career. Moton explains why Samuel Jr. would be a smart acquisition to the Packers with the following arguments.
“The Packers need a possible starter at cornerback whether they keep Jaire Alexander or not. Despite the fact that Alexander has missed ten games in consecutive seasons, a trade would clearly create a need in the secondary. Samuel had neck surgery in April, but he intends to play this season and will stay in touch with many teams after a check-up in July, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Alexander can be held by the Packers until they have more information about Samuel’s summer medicals. Green Bay should sign Samuel and trade Alexander if the doctors give the all-clear to play.
The Packers are trying to take the next step in the NFC hierarchy
After making the playoffs in consecutive seasons, Green Bay is in a good position. Jordan Love, who is only 26 years old, is locked in as the franchise quarterback, and the team is still among the youngest in the NFL overall. This group is now experienced and hoping to make the transition from good to great, but the secondary is a concern following a season in which they finished in the middle of the pack. If the Packers do not keep Alexander, they will have to make some additions to this group because it will be difficult to compete in the crowded NFC North.
The Chicago Bears have had a very positive offseason, and the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings are coming off of incredible 2024 regular seasons. The Packers should still be regarded as a contender in the NFC Conference, even though it will be difficult for them to win the division. It’s unclear if Asante Samuel Jr. or Jaire Alexander will play a role in that future.
