The 33-year-old, who was born and raised in Coventry, went on to make eight appearances and score just once as he played a role in Frank Lampard’s side qualifying for the play-offs, where they out to now Premier League Sunderland

Explaining his decision to swap the West Midlands for Devon to Argyle TV, Paterson admitted he was “excited” by the project and is looking forward to the new season.

“I feel good, it happened quickly,” he said. “My season finished just over a week ago with the play-offs, but I’m happy to get it done early, know where I will be next year and where I can focus my energy.

“Argyle are a big club, I’ve always enjoyed playing here, especially with the good atmosphere, and they are a club that are looking to try and get straight back up after getting relegated last season. My dad lives close to here as well, which is another positive, so I get to see him a bit more.

“Another reason was the project. Speaking to the gaffer, who’s a really likeable character and somebody that’s driven and wants to get promoted straight away, I just felt like it was something that I wanted to do, get done early and then I can get on my holidays and enjoy some time off.”

He is also looking forward to meeting the supporters, who he has experiences of seeing over his more than 450 matches in the English Football League: “Playing here, the atmosphere never makes this an easy place. I played here a couple of months back with Coventry, came off the bench and the atmosphere was great. We lost that game and deserved to lose; that atmosphere can make a big difference.

“I’ve always noticed that Argyle take a lot of fans away as well, which has always surprised me considering how far away it is. When I’ve played for different clubs, they always brought so many fans, which can make a big difference in any league.
