“The perfect signing” – QPR urged to take advantage of Burnley contract decision

“The perfect signing” – QPR urged to take advantage of Burnley contract decision.

Nathan Redmond - QPR

This post is a part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which offers our FLW Fan Pundits their personal thoughts on teams, players, managers, breaking news, possible signings, and more.

Queens Park Rangers may undergo significant change this summer as they are ready to decide on their management situation.

It’s safe to say that QPR had a lacklustre season despite being predicted to be one of the Championship’s dark horses. After threatening relegation several times during the season, they ultimately finished in 15th position.

2024-25 Championship table
Team P GD Pts
9 West Brom 46 10 64
10 Middlesbrough 46 8 64
11 Swansea City 46 -5 61
12 Sheffield Wednesday 46 -9 58
13 Norwich City 46 3 57
14 Watford 46 -8 57
15 QPR 46 -10 56
16 Portsmouth 46 -13 54

The R’s were embroiled in some major drama during the final week of the season, though, as head coach Marti Cifuentes was put on gardening leave following reports that his representatives had discussions with West Bromwich Albion. Kevin Betsy and Xavi Calm took over as interim managers for the team’s 1-0 victory over Sunderland on the last day.

The Hoops are reportedly nearing the hiring of former Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup, and former Lyon manager Pierre Sage has also been linked to the West London team. Cifuentes will not be taking over at The Hawthorns, but his job at Loftus Road undoubtedly appears untenable.

There will probably be a lot more activity at the club in the upcoming months despite the management uncertainty. QPR has revealed that captain Steve Cook has activated an extension clause in his contract and that they have exercised their option to retain striker Michael Frey.

After Burnley’s release, QPR was instructed to target Nathan Redmond.

Carabao Cup - Fourth Round - Everton v Burnley

Louis Moir, a FLW’s QPR fan commentator, was asked which out-of-contract Championship player he would like the team to recruit this summer. He suggested that the R’s try to sign winger Nathan Redmond, who Burnley recently released.

Redmond was a member of the Clarets team that was promoted automatically from the Championship this season, but the 31-year-old has had a difficult season. Despite helping Jeremy Sarmiento score his fifth goal in his team’s resounding 5-0 victory at Loftus Road last month, he has only made three substitute appearances across all competitions.

Louis maintained that Redmond would be a valuable acquisition to the Hoops given their current winger deficit despite his injury issues, and he thinks he may be a viable target now that he is a free agency.

“I think we could potentially be in the market for another winger,” Louis stated to FLW.

“Neither Yan Min-hyeok nor Koki Saito are guaranteed to be signed.

“Ilias Chair drifts out from the wide positions, and Karamoko Dembele does the same. Paul Smyth has reportedly been offered a new contract, so he may stay.”

We could need more choices out wide, though, and I don’t believe it would be a bad idea to look at players with experience.

Nathan Redmond is one player who Burnley has let go.

“He’s not too old, but he didn’t play much for Burnley last season due to injury issues.

“He’s a pretty good and experienced player to have in your squad in the Championship, if he stays fit, and he would fit into a squad that wants to try and push on.”

Although he wouldn’t start every game due to his age, I believe he could be really good. He provides you more options out wide and might even free up Ilias Chair to concentrate on playing at number 10.

“We may benefit from having Nathan Redmond, a true wide player, on either wing.

“Over his career, he has been a respectable player, but I would want to see us add more Championship-experienced players who are familiar with the league and have played in England.

“I believe we need a combination of that and international talents.

Redmond is, in my opinion, the ideal addition to any Championship team.

“It might be comparable to when we signed Mark Pugh a few years ago.

“He was okay, but he did a job for us, and I think Redmond could be similar to that, if not slightly better.”

Nathan Redmond, a stumbling block for Birmingham City, might face QPR.

Nathan Redmond - Burnley vs Nottingham Forest

Redmond struggled with injuries during his two-year stint at Burnley, making only 18 appearances. However, if he can maintain his fitness, he has the potential to be a Championship-level threat.

Redmond was linked with Birmingham City during the January transfer window and may find it difficult to turn down a return to St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park if their interest resurfaces this summer. QPR, a club with ambitions to climb the table, could be the ideal fit for him.

It remains to be seen whether the Blues will pursue a move for Redmond or set their sights higher after regaining promotion to the second tier, but the former Norwich and Southampton player is expected to have plenty of suitors now that he is available on a free transfer.
