Alex Gilbert has opened up on what he describes as a “dream moment” as his loan spell at Charlton Athletic came to an end, while also facing an uncertain future at Middlesbrough.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder joined Charlton on loan from Middlesbrough in January in search of regular first-team football. Having struggled to break into Michael Carrick’s plans at Boro following his summer move from Brentford, the loan to League One side Charlton offered a chance to reset and prove his worth.

Gilbert took the opportunity with both hands, featuring in 17 league matches for the Addicks and playing a key role in their strong finish to the season. His performances earned praise from Charlton boss Nathan Jones, who regularly lauded his work rate, creativity, and attitude.

Speaking after Charlton’s final match of the season, Gilbert reflected on a memorable spell in South London.

“It’s been a brilliant few months,” he said. “The fans, the players, the staff — everyone at Charlton has made me feel at home. To end the loan spell with a goal and help the team finish on a high was a dream moment for me.”

That “dream moment” came in Charlton’s last home game, where Gilbert scored a superb solo goal to cap off an impressive 3-1 win. The strike not only showcased his technical ability but also his confidence and composure under pressure — qualities he hopes will help him at the next stage of his career.

But what comes next is far from certain.

Gilbert returns to Middlesbrough with just one year left on his contract and no guarantees about his place in the squad. While Boro are expected to assess all returning loanees during pre-season, Gilbert’s pathway to regular minutes remains unclear given the club’s current depth in midfield and attacking areas.

“Of course, I want to play football regularly. That’s why this loan was so important to me,” Gilbert admitted. “I’ll go back to Boro, train hard, and see what the plan is. Whatever happens, I’ve shown what I can do, and I’m ready for the next challenge.”

There is also reported interest from several League One and Championship clubs who tracked his progress at Charlton. Some have even inquired about a permanent deal, though Middlesbrough are yet to make a decision on his future.

For now, Gilbert is content with ending the season on a high and is grateful for the chance to show his quality.

“Sometimes all you need is a run of games and a bit of trust. Charlton gave me that, and I’ll always be thankful.”
