Watford will have a busy summer as they try to get closer to the top of the Championship standings.
Tom Cleverley and the Hornets had a contentious split following the end of the 2024–2025 season. The former midfielder was well-liked by the supporters, and many praised him for his performance in his first managing position despite the board and ownership’s harsh criticism.

At Vicarage Road, Paulo Pezzolano is now in charge, and it appears that a new off-pitch player is being pursued to help him as well.
According to Italian writer Orazio Accomando’s article on X, Watford is almost ready to hire former player Valon Behrami as their next sports director.
The 40-year-old, who retired in 2022, is being courted by the Hornets. Since hanging up his boots, Behrami has not had any formal positions, but it appears that he is not destined to play a significant part in a new chapter at Vicarage Road.
Behrami will probably collaborate closely with Watford’s technical director Gian Luca Nani, who serves in a similar capacity with sister club Udinese, as a liaison between the club’s administration and hierarchy.
Back at Watford, Berhami had a career filled with travel, having begun in his home country of Switzerland and then spending time in Italy with teams like Lazio and Genoa.
After playing for West Ham for three years in England from 2008 to 2011, he returned to Italy. Prior to Watford’s 2015 approach, Behrami played for Fiorentina, Napoli, and Hamburg, Germany.

The 83-cap Swiss international played 49 games for the Hornets before being sold after two years at Vicarage Road.
Following stints with Udinese, FC Sion, Genoa, and Brescia, Behrami retired in June 2022.
