Mateus Fernandes has recently been linked to Leeds United, but Southampton officials have apparently “laughed off” rumors of a £30 million price tag.
Alan Nixon reported on interest from Leeds, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace in Fernandes, who was mentioned as a potential Elland Road signing over the weekend. With Daniel Farke’s team currently the closest to that valuation, the EFL journalist stated on his Patreon page that a £30 million bid might be sufficient to persuade Southampton to sell.
The 20-year-old might be available for as little as £25 million after Southampton was relegated to the Championship, according to Football Insider, which also mentioned Leeds, Villa, and West Ham as potential destinations. Although Fernandes will undoubtedly have no shortage of suitors, the prospect of a low-cost deal has been dashed.
According to the Daily Echo, a Southampton-based publication, St. Mary’s officials have reportedly rejected rumors that Fernandes could fetch up to £30 million, which is twice the £15 million they paid Sporting CP for the attacking midfielder less than a year ago. The report maintains that Saints value their 2024–25 Fans’ Player of the Season “significantly higher” than recent estimates, and that a contract that expires in 2029 puts them in a strong position to control the summer.

The report also states that every player will have a price because Premier League TV money was lost after relegation, though it makes no mention of how high that worth might be. For comparison, Southampton’s Tyler Dibling, who is a year younger and being considered by elite European clubs, is estimated to be worth around £50 million.
Naturally, a number of factors influence discussions, such as the player’s desire—or lack thereof—to play in the Championship, so the selling club’s appraisal of a player isn’t necessarily as solid as the amount required to seal a deal. If teams contact Southampton for negotiations, it is also normal for them to offer the maximum price in an effort to improve their position.
Fernandes has established himself as a Premier League regular, playing 36 of Southampton’s 38 top-flight games with two goals and four assists, in contrast to Dibling, who was in and out of the Southampton squad at different stages during the season.
