What QPR have officially said about Jimmy Dunne’s future as Sheffield United circle.

Queens Park Rangers are still in contract talks with 2024/25 Player of the Year Jimmy Dunne, who is nearing the end of his current deal, despite speculations that Sheffield United, another Championship club, are interested in signing him this summer. Dunne, a versatile defender, has evolved as one of QPR’s most important and reliable players over the previous 18 months, but his contract expires at the end of June, making him likely to depart the club this summer. Football League World linked the Republic of Ireland international with a January move to the Blades, citing his strong performances in the first half of the season, but he stayed put in West London and continued to be a standout at the back for the R’s.
Now that the campaign is officially over and United is rumoured to be resuming their interest, QPR has moved to provide an update on Dunne’s situation and future with the club.
QPR problem. Jimmy Dunne’s contract update amid Sheffield United links
Dunne has been in the best form of his life in W12 over the previous year, and his excellent performance earned him a start in all but one of their 46 Championship games last season. Marti Cifuentes also appointed him as captain near the end of the season. Sheffield United’s interest in him in January was unsurprising given that he is a quality Championship defender with the versatility to play at right-back or centre-back. They were unsuccessful, but he continued to amaze throughout the season, eventually winning the R’s Supporters’ Player of the Year award last month.

He is swiftly approaching the end of his contract at Loftus Road, and United are apparently prepared to revive their prior interest, according to Alan Nixon, as Chris Wilder hopes to kick off his summer rebuild with the free transfer of the 27-year-old. QPR have finally provided some clarification on his future at the club in their official retained list, which was posted on Wednesday morning, confirming that they’remain in conversation’ with Dunne about a new contract as he approaches his exit next month.
Dunne appears unlikely to sign a new QPR contract – Sheffield United are a great option for any player.
Dunne just earned his first cap for the Republic of Ireland as a result of his strong QPR performances, and he has over 150 appearances for the club as of the end of the most recent campaign. He has become a firm favourite at Loftus Road, and his departure at the conclusion of his contract in June would be a tremendous loss. With that said, an exit appears to be the most likely outcome right now, as his heart is undoubtedly set on leaving, having yet to sign a new extension with a month remaining until he becomes a free agent and can join any club that offers him a new contract.
His future would surely have already been sorted out if he was definitely planning on staying in W12, but R’s supporters will at least be encouraged by the fact he is still in discussions with the hierarchy over fresh terms, so no definite outcome can be assumed as yet.
Dunne is a top Championship defender, and the Blades are expected to compete at the top end of the second tier next season following their recent play-off final defeat to Sunderland. The opportunity to join such a team, which has a decent possibility of playing Premier League football in the near future, is undoubtedly one that the 27-year-old will seize. Chris Wilder has previously revealed that he “obviously” values Dunne’s qualities, which explains their January bid, and it appears that they will offer him a contract shortly after recent rumours of their interest.
If the Republic of Ireland international joins United this summer, he will be a key player next season as they look to achieve automatic promotion for the second time. It would be a significant loss for QPR, and they would have to recruit intelligently to try to replace his talents if he left, but for the time being, they will hope that he will continue with the club beyond the end of next month.
