Hearts hero has transfer interest amid Sheffield Wednesday contract offer and could be tempted away from Owls.

The Hearts favourite’s future is uncertain after receiving a contract offer from Sheffield Wednesday. A Hearts fan favourite could be on the move this summer, as a contract offer from Sheffield Wednesday remains unsigned. Callum Paterson starred for the Jambos from 2012 to 2017, playing a variety of positions and scoring 39 goals in 162 games. He has been with Sheffield Wednesday since 2020, but is out of contract this summer, with a new offer on the table if he wants to extend his Owls career.
However, no agreement has been reached, and the future remains unknown. With free agency looming, the Hearts hero may now have choices on the table as a number of teams south of the border continue to monitor his situation.
Hearts hero could complete free transfer out of Sheffield Wednesday
According to the Star, a new contract for him is not nearing conclusion, with only club captain and former Scotland international Barry Bannan close to signing new terms, and defender Akin Famewo still not committing. Teams from the English Championship and League One are lined up in case Sheffield Wednesday’s contract offer is not accepted. According to reports, the 30-year-old, who has played around 200 games for the Owls during his tenure at Hillsborough, has been offered a new deal to stay with the club beyond this summer, but nothing has been settled as of yet. Now, with Wednesday yet to finalise an agreement to keep him, The Star understands that a host of clubs across the Championship and League One are looking into tempting him away from Middlewood Road as a free agent.”
What former Hearts star has said about Sheffield Wednesday future
Speaking in the Spring about his future, Paterson said: “I spoke to the manager at the start of the season, and I obviously he said I wasn’t in, well, not in the plans but I wouldn’t get as much game time as I would like. So I said to him, ‘I’m here, I’ve always been here, and if you need me, I’ll be ready.’ I kept myself ready and I took my chances when it came along. I said to him, at the time, my wife is due a baby in ten days, so I can’t exactly do anything. It’s not as if I’m going to leave, go and try at a new club. I’ll be here and I’ll stick it out. I’ll ride the storm and hopefully come through the other side.”
Paterson also expressed his desire to rejoin the Scotland squad under Steve Clarke. The ex-Jambo, who has 17 caps for the national team, added: “I have said before that playing for the country is the pinnacle of football for me.” And I missed out on the Euros quad and maybe the previous few World Cups, which was disappointing, but there are some truly exceptional players in that Scotland group. If I just keep doing my job here, taking over and completing my milestones, hopefully I’ll catch someone’s eye.
