Ferencvaros ‘monitoring’ Stephen Welsh as Robbie Keane interested in Celtic centre-back

Stephen Welsh has two years left on his Celtic contract, but his future is most certainly elsewhere from Parkhead.

Welsh was loaned to Belgian club KV Mechelen in January due to a lack of opportunity at Celtic under Brendan Rodgers.

The central defender appeared in 17 games for KV Mechelen and scored one goal, and it is believed the club wants to keep him for the upcoming 2025/26 season.

According to Sky Sports, Welsh will be on Celtic’s transfer list this summer as the club looks to unload a number of periphery players from the first team. So, could his next club be Ferencvaros, led by former Celtic scorer Robbie Keane?

Ferencvaros wants Celtic’s Welsh players.

According to The Celtic Way, Welsh is being’monitored’ by the Hungarian giants, who have recently won their domestic top-flight championship. Keane is presently the manager of Ferencvaros, and the club is reportedly interested in the defender, who has appeared only 16 times for the Hoops since August 2023.

As previously said, Welsh is under contract with Celtic until 2027, therefore Ferencvaros would have to pay a significant fee for the 25-year-old from Coatbridge.

Welsh stated regarding his stay in Belgium, “I have loved every minute of it. I believe it is the best thing I have done; it is almost like a refresher course for six months to go and play football at the highest level.”

Keane was appointed head coach of the Hungarian club in January, after previously managing ATK (2018) and Maccabi Tel Aviv (2023-2024).

The Irishman has won 15 of his 25 games in charge, which was enough to propel Ferencvaros to the Nemzeti Bajnokság I championship.

Keane also led the squad to the Europa League knockout round play-offs, although they lost to Viktoria Plzen in two legs.

Of course, Celtic supporters will remember Keane from his loan stay at Paradise in 2010. In 19 matches, he scored 16 goals but exited the season without a prize.
