Everton have announced the permanent signing of Flamengo midfielder Carlos Alcaraz.
The 22-year-old, known as ‘Charly’, impressed on Merseyside in the second half of the 2024-25 season after joining the Toffees on loan on Deadline Day in the winter window.
Everton have revealed that they have exercised their option to purchase Alcarez on a permanent basis for an undisclosed price when his loan from Brazilian giants Flamengo expires at the end of June.
It is anticipated that the Toffees will spend roughly €15 million (£12.6 million) for the Argentina Under-23 international, who will sign a two-year contract until the summer of 2027.
Alcarez is manager David Moyes’ first summer acquisition since returning to the club in January, and more fresh recruits are likely before they begin a new chapter at their new home, the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Alcaraz moves permanently to Everton on a two-year contract. Alcaraz contributed two goals and three assists for Everton in seven starts and eight substitute appearances in the Premier League, helping Moyes’ side escape the relegation zone and finish 13th.
The combative midfielder won 2-1 at Crystal Palace in February before scoring the sole goal in Everton’s close 1-0 triumph over Newcastle United on the final weekend of the Premier League season earlier this month.
Prior to joining Everton, Alcaraz spent six months with Flamengo, where he scored three goals and assisted twice in 19 games, winning the Copa do Brasil in August last year.
Alcarez began his career with Racing Club in Argentina before joining Southampton in January 2023, where he made his debut against Everton at Goodison Park.
His success at St Mary’s piqued the interest of Italian giants Juventus, who signed him on loan in January 2024, and the midfielder went on to win the Coppa Italia.
Everton have decided to sign Alcaraz on a permanent basis, despite the uncertainty surrounding the futures of out-of-contract trio Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Michael Keane, and Idrissa Gueye.
Gueye is said to be close to signing a contract extension with the Toffees, but there have been no signs as to whether Calvert-Lewin or Keane would extend their terms, meaning they may leave the club for free on June.
