The first transfer Middlesbrough must make after summer window opens on June 1 is so obvious
Middlesbrough can start signing players, along with every other Championship club, from June 1.
Thanks to the Club World Cup, the summer transfer window dates have been altered slightly this year.
The window will open for a brief time from June 1 before closing on June 10.
It will open again on the 16th of the month, then close for a second time on September 1, 2025.
There is expected to be a lot of transfer activity at the Riverside Stadium, with Hayden Hackney the most likely name to leave Middlesbrough, who will move some players on.
We understand Finn Azaz is going nowhere despite more links to Premier League clubs emerging this week, while Rav van den Berg is expected to have suitors.
But what about potential incomings at Middlesbrough over the next three months?
Middlesbrough’s first summer transfer priority is obvious
If you ask most Boro fans, they’ll probably say that there are a number of positions that need improving this summer, and they’d be right.
However, it seems the glaring hole in the squad right now that must be addressed, possibly with two additions, is right-back.
Middlesbrough announced their retained list in May, confirming that Anfernee Dijksteel is leaving at the end of his contract on June 30.
Meanwhile, we learned recently that Boro could move on Luke Ayling after his first full season in the North East.
That would leave the Teessiders without a single senior, natural, right-back on their books.
Van den Berg can play there if needed, but it seems obvious that a right-sided defender must be brought in.

Who are Middlesbrough trying to sign this summer
It has been pretty quiet in the build-up to the summer transfer window opening, but a few options are being explored.
In terms of new right-backs, Middlesbrough do like Bali Mumba of Plymouth Argyle, though nothing is thought to be advanced regarding that potential transfer at this stage, we understand.
Elsewhere, Tyrhys Dolan remains of interest with his deal at Blackburn Rovers due to expire soon.
We spoke to Graeme Bailey about Middlesbrough signing Dolan recently, and he told us: “I’d be surprised if Dolan stayed at Blackburn. He’s run his contract down for a reason. There’s Middlesbrough, and there’s other Championship clubs in for him as well. I’d be very surprised if he didn’t move on from what I’m being told.
“Boro are definitely still trying, he’s had those talks, but obviously they’ve got a few issues to resolve themselves as well [Carrick situation].”
