The most recent Championship headlines as Middlesbrough and its opponents prepare for the upcoming season.
Sheffield United will decide whether or not to keep Chris Wilder as manager next season within the next week. According to Football Insider, the former Middlesbrough manager faces the possibility of being fired by the Blades leadership this summer. This comes after their defeat to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium cost them promotion last season.
According to the source, American-based consortium COH Sports is considering firing Wilder just four months after signing him to a new deal that runs until 2028. Sheffield United will hope to launch a genuine promotion challenge next season, since recently modified parachute payment rules mean that clubs that only spend one season in the Premier League earn only two years of consolidatory payments from the top level.

Even though Wilder’s team missed out on promotion, they can consider themselves unlucky. Despite starting the season with a two-point penalty, they finished with 90 points and missed out on a top-two finish to Leeds United and Burnley, who both scored a historic 100 points to gain automatic promotion. Despite losing in the play-offs, they set a new record by defeating Bristol City 6-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals, with Wilder eager to continue next season at his boyhood club.
Summer Interest in Boro Heartbreaker
Jack Rudoni scored twice on the penultimate day of the season, setting Boro up for a disappointing tenth-place finish while propelling Coventry City into the play-offs. It was part of an extremely productive season for the attacking midfielder, who scored ten goals and assisted 13 times across all competitions last year.
Now, rumours claim Coventry City may face a battle to keep the 23-year-old as Premier League interest develops. Newcastle United and Leeds United have been linked with Rudoni this summer, while recently relegated Southampton and Leicester City are also thought to be monitoring his situation.
However, BBC correspondent Mantej Mann posted on X, helping Coventry’s chances of keeping the midfield player: “Jack Rudoni was always going to be the subject of speculation after an impressive first season at CCFC.” The midfielder is reportedly content at the CBS and loves working with Frank Lampard, but he still has Premier League aspirations.
Due to late payments, Sheffield
Wednesday is subject to a transfer embargo. Players and certain staff were not paid on time this month, the second time in three months that this has happened, and Sheffield Wednesday may be subject to a transfer embargo. The EFL penalty may be as harsh as a three-transfer-window ban.
“The club has sent a letter to players and staff affected, assuring them that wages should be paid on Monday,” the Mirror reported. Whether the club is actually barred from paying transfer or loan fees for the upcoming three windows will depend on the precise timing.
Hull City apparently close in on a new leader. According to sources in Turkey, Hull City are close to appointing a new manager after replacing Ruben Selles earlier this month. Sergej Jakirovic has ‘accepted in principle’ to fill the empty position at the MKM Stadium, according to DHA.
Jakirovic is now in charge of Turkish team Kayserispor, who sit 12th in the Turkish Super Lig league heading into their final game of the season on Sunday. According to the story, he would say his goodbyes during that game before moving to East Yorkshire.
