Exclusive: Don Goodman Predicts Sheffield Wednesday Will Suffer Amid Danny Rohl Uncertainty
Pundit Don Goodman believes the ongoing uncertainty surrounding manager Danny Rohl’s future could have a damaging impact on Sheffield Wednesday if it continues much longer.
The Owls emerged as surprise play-off contenders following a strong start to the season. However, their promotion hopes collapsed in the second half of the campaign amid a series of off-field issues. Despite this, they still managed to secure a respectable 12th-place finish.
Tensions between Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri began in December after the manager was denied a move to Southampton. The situation escalated into a bitter public dispute, which was only resolved toward the end of the January transfer window.
Although Southampton were reportedly interested in Rohl again this summer following their relegation from the Premier League and the departure of Ivan Juric, they ultimately appointed Will Still as their new manager. Rohl was also linked with Leicester City, Fulham, Crystal Palace, and RB Leipzig, but he now appears unlikely to land any of those positions.
According to journalist Rob Staton, Rohl recently held “positive talks” with Werder Bremen, who had a “legitimate interest” in the 36-year-old. However, his “excessive and prohibitive” compensation fee—believed to be around £5 million—proved to be a significant obstacle, leaving him in an increasingly difficult position at Hillsborough.
Don Goodman Issues Warning Over Ongoing Uncertainty
Speaking exclusively to *Football League World*, Goodman expressed concern that Sheffield Wednesday could suffer the most from the uncertainty surrounding Rohl’s future. He warned that the club risks falling behind its Championship rivals if the situation is not resolved soon.
> “This is the time of year when clubs are deep into planning for next season,” Goodman said.
>
> “But while the Danny Rohl saga drags on, it’s hard to see what kind of planning can realistically take place.
>
> “It’s clear Rohl doesn’t want to remain at the club under the current ownership. The fact that nothing seems to be happening is a difficult situation for him—no doubt about it.
>
> “Maybe the buyout clause is the sticking point. But ultimately, the party that will feel the most pain is Sheffield Wednesday.
>
> “If a new manager is coming in, they should already be well into pre-season and recruitment planning. That likely isn’t the case right now.”
As Goodman points out, it’s clear that Rohl is eager to leave Hillsborough. He has already alienated a portion of the fanbase following a recent interview in which he openly discussed potential future roles—comments many supporters deemed inappropriate while he remains under contract.
However, with few viable exit routes currently available to him, a resolution does not appear imminent. This leaves the Owls at serious risk of entering next season poorly prepared—similar to the summer of 2023, when Darren Moore’s mid-June departure and Xisco Muñoz’s delayed arrival hampered preparations following promotion.
That year, much of the club’s transfer activity occurred in the final weeks of the window. Wednesday collected just three points from their opening 11 games of the 2023–24 season. While Rohl eventually steered them clear of relegation, a repeat of such circumstances might not end as favorably.
Further complicating matters, the club confirmed on Friday yet another delay in wage payments—a repeat of an issue that first occurred in March. With recurring financial problems, Wednesday could face a three-window transfer ban, which would severely limit their ability to recruit a new manager and rebuild the squad.
