How the salaries of League One clubs compare to those of Bradford City, Port Vale, Doncaster Rovers, and AFC Wimbledon

With 84 points, Rovers finished six points ahead of the Bantams and four ahead of Port Vale to win the fourth division title.

Wimbledon defeated Walsall 1-0 on Monday to secure their spot in the third division through the play-offs.

The four clubs will now begin preparing for life in League One, hoping to stay in the level for more than a year and possibly even establish their ability to compete at the top of the table in the long run.

Here, we compare their pay costs to those of the teams in the third division this season using approximated numbers from Capology.

Out of the four teams who were promoted from League Two this season, Bradford has the largest salary bill.

The complete first team roster of the Bantams receives £86,012 in wages per week.

With weekly salaries of £86,450 and £97,712, respectively, only Carlisle United and Salford City spend more on their teams.

Top 5 highest wage bills in League Two – 2024/25 (estimated figures from Capology)
Club Weekly salary (£)
Carlisle United 97,712
Salford City 86,450
Bradford City 86,012
Colchester United 84,085
Chesterfield 84,050

With a weekly salary of £70,358—the eleventh highest in the division—Port Vale is the second best paid of the four teams that were promoted.

Winners of the playoffs Compared to their rivals at Wembley Stadium Walsall, who pay their players £59,050-per-week, Wimbledon has a salary bill of £68,146, which puts them in 14th place in the division.

Doncaster, the division champions, pay their players £62,750 a week, which is the 16th biggest wage expenditure in the league.

Even though Rovers’ salary was only 64% of Carlisle’s, the two teams ended up on opposite sides of the table, with United placing 23rd and losing their spot in the EFL.

Last season, Peterborough United had the lowest salary expenditure in League One, paying their first team players £63,812 a week.

This would place them slightly below Morcecambe’s £66,850 weekly salary spend, making them the fifteenth highest wage bill in League Two.

However, Birmingham City led the way with a weekly salary of £308,000 for their entire squad, far more than any side in the fourth tier last season.

Wrexham and Huddersfield Town, with weekly wage bills of £205,200 and £220,169, respectively, completed the top three.
