A football team from League Two defeats “most of League One” in their attempt to recruit a former Hartlepool United player.

After the United States repelled competition from “most of League One” for the much sought-after forward, former Hartlepool United striker Will Goodwin has joined Colchester United.

The 23-year-old, who spent the second part of the previous season at Wigan without scoring in eight games, is joining Colchester on a season-long loan from Championship team Oxford United.

Despite this, United States boss Danny Cowley stated that his team had to work hard to get Goodwin because a number of League One teams were reportedly interested in the striker.

Cowley visited Goodwin, who decided to join with League Two Colchester instead. Cowley says he expects his squad to be “a top team in League Two” despite the Essex team being 10th last season.

Goodwin, who has excelled with his work and ambition throughout his career thus far but has occasionally failed in front of goal, is expected to have a big 2025–2026 season.

In February 2021, Goodwin, a Potters supporter, gained a transfer to Stoke after starting his career at Chester, where he made his debut as a teenager.

In 2011, Goodwin walked out with Jermaine Pennant in the FA Cup final at Wembley as Stoke’s kid mascot.

After Pools was promoted back to League Two in the summer of 2021, the forward secured a loan deal with the team.

Despite impressing with his hard work and commitment, he failed to score again until December after scoring on his debut against Barrow on August 15.

After scoring twice in 15 games, he rejoined Stoke in January.

Goodwin scored eight goals in 27 games during his first half of the 2022–2023 season while on loan at Torquay of the National League.

Cheltenham saw Goodwin when he was in Devon, and in January 2023 he signed a long-term contract with the League One team.

Before sealing a move to Oxford in January of last year, he made 32 appearances at Whaddon Road and scored seven goals. Despite making 10 of his 11 appearances from the bench, the forward has not found the net since scoring his maiden goal for the Yellows in his third game.

Goodwin, who signed with Colchester, hopes to regain his goal-scoring ability after spending some time on loan at Wigan last season.

“I’m really happy to be here, and it’s nice that the gaffer has wanted me for some time,” he said on the official US club website.

“I’m going to score my goals because I’m powerful, mobile, and like to go in the box. “I’m not afraid to put myself about – I like to mix it up a little bit.”
