“A Massive Occasion” – Sheffield United Stopper Ready for Championship Play-off Final

Michael Cooper has been a significant player for Sheffield United in his first season as they continue their promotion pursuit.

Arriving from Plymouth Argyle for a reported £2 million cost (which may rise to £4 million if promoted), the 25-year-old custodian has excelled in all facets of goalkeeping – shot-stopping, decision-making, commanding his box and distribution – making the claimed fee an amazing steal.

Michael Cooper’s first season at Sheffield United has been superb.

Cooper’s debut season at Bramall Lane has been nothing short of exceptional. In 43 Championship appearances, he has conceded only 33 goals, averaging 0.77 goals per 90 (91st percentile). His impressive performances have seen him keep 21 clean sheets, reflecting a clean sheet completion rate of 48.8%.

Heading into the Championship play-off final, Cooper boasts an 80% save percentage (96th percentile), and has prevented nearly six goals by himself this term.

Cooper reflected on his season with SUTV, saying: “It has been a brilliant season since coming in last August; I don’t know what I really expected, but some of the performances and results have been fantastic, and there is now one final hurdle to overcome.

“I was honestly surprised to be named the club’s Player of the Year, the backing we’ve had has been tremendous, both home and away, so I’m just grateful for their support.”

He went on to explain, “Our success so far this season has been earned through a lot of hard work, a lot of planning and small details, and, most importantly, working as a team.” We created a solid foundation early in the season, and since then we’ve built and continued to strive for our objective.

Cooper Excited to Participate in “Massive Occasion”

Cooper is set to make his Wembley Stadium debut as Sheffield United prepare for the Championship play-off final against Sunderland. He called the approaching encounter as a “massive occasion” and voiced his long-time goal of playing at the national stadium.

“When I’ve watched the finals in previous seasons, I’ve always wanted to play there one day, and I honestly can’t wait to walk out at Wembley; it’s a huge occasion for everyone.

“I’m not one to look too far ahead; potential is one thing, doing it is another. Being at Wembley in a Championship play-off final is so special.”
