According to stores, pubs, and eateries, the economic impact of up to 100,000 fans swarming the city centre caused some companies to see a fivefold boost in sales.

Following the Don’s Scottish Cup winning parade, Aberdeen city centre businesses are reporting a significant increase in trade.

According to shops, pubs, and restaurants, some businesses reported a fivefold boost in sales on Sunday as a result of up to 100,000 fans swarming into the heart of the Granite City to rejoice with their Hampden heroes.

“The happy scenes we witnessed on Sunday were almost unbelievable – and so was the massive boost in trade it brought to city centre businesses,” said Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, the city centre Business Improvement District.

Some people in the hospitality industry have delighted in telling us that their business has easily increased fivefold compared to what they would typically anticipate on a Sunday. Both they and I hope that this will have a long-lasting effect.

People from all around the city and the county flocked to Aberdeen on Sunday, many of whom may not have visited the city in a long time. They will have learned—or rediscovered—for themselves that Aberdeen is a thriving city with a lot to offer.

After what have been tumultuous times for the city core, Adrian expressed his excitement at seeing companies re-energised and enthused.

It would be fantastic to maintain the momentum and the feeling of exhilaration, he stated. Thankfully, when The Tall Ships Races come to Aberdeen in July, we will have the opportunity to do just that.

“I’m hoping that more groups of joyful, enthusiastic, and joyous people will be enjoying themselves at The Tall Ships, which will also help the city center’s economy.”

“Once people see what can be accomplished when we all become ‘Team Aberdeen,’ we can build on that positive spirit and can-do attitude.”

During this week’s BID network meetings, which bring together levy-paying businesses to network and exchange news and information, Aberdeen Inspired received a lot of feedback from businesses.

Many people who attended yesterday’s Union Street BID meeting were eager to talk about their Sunday experiences and future plans.

Sunday was a “amazing day,” according to Gavin Paterson, general manager of the Douglas Hotel, which includes the Royal Athenaeum Suites and Shiprow Village.

The turnout was amazing, he claimed, and the occupants of the Athenaeum were astounded to see so many people outside their window in the morning. The Aberdeen City Council deserves a lot of praise for putting everything together so quickly.

It was very popular in terms of foot traffic. There were people all across Shiprow, and both Malone’s and Ivy Lodge and Terrace did quite well. It was a huge lift for us because it was five times as much business as we typically do on a Sunday.

“We need to build on the fact that bringing that crowd into the city completely changed the atmosphere of the city.” It would be amazing if we could accomplish anything. Naturally, hundreds of thousands of people will be arriving for four days as the Tall Ships return. It is going to be truly spectacular.

The Trinity Centre’s centre manager, Kenny Bruce, concurred that the exuberant atmosphere in the city centre was fantastic and beneficial to the centre’s operations.

“All of our businesses were doing very well, and our parking lot was full. We actually saw a near 60% increase week on week,” he said.

Nothing brings the community together more than a successful team, and Aberdeen residents are eager to see the bright side of things. I believe we can stay on the verge of it and restore the city center’s flare.

In the meantime, Chantal Necchi of La Lombarda at the Castlegate stated that the restaurant, which is generally closed, was opened on Sunday, specifically for the parade.

“We warned the chefs on Friday that we would be open on Sunday if Aberdeen won on Saturday,” she stated. The Castlegate and Castle Street were completely filled from the moment we arrived on Sunday morning.

“The atmosphere was electrifying.” Although I was aware that it would be significant, I never thought Sunday’s event would be that amazing. Hopefully, the Tall Ships will also provide that.
