Air ambulance called and one taken to hospital after crash closes road

After a crash in Sunderland, an air ambulance was dispatched to transport a patient to the hospital via blue light.

Emergency services responded to a crash on Spelterworks Road at 10.09am today (April 26).

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) responded to the scene, and one person was transported to the RVI by road ambulance.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) stated, “We were called to a road traffic incident on Spelterworks Road in Sunderland today (April 26) at 10:09.

“We dispatched one ambulance crew, one clinical team leader, and were assisted by colleagues from Great North Air Ambulance Service.”

Photos from the scene show police cars blocking the road while emergency services deal with the crash.

According to a witness, police are diverting traffic.

According to the AA, the road is still closed. The Northern Echo contacted Northumbria Police for further information.
