Alfie May has joined Huddersfield Town on a permanent basis, barely 12 months after signing a three-year contract with Birmingham City.
Huddersfield almost signed May from Charlton Athletic last summer – a medical was even supposed to have been completed – but the Blues swooped in at the final minute to grab the striker’s signature.
Blues signed May to boost their chances of promotion from League One, and the experienced goalscorer delivered, scoring 16 times in all competitions.
May appeared 57 times in Blues’ record-breaking season, but his chances of appearing in the Championship under Chris Davies have been seriously damaged by the addition of former Celtic hero Kyogo Furuhashi.
Kyogo, Jay Stansfield, and Lyndon Dykes all rank higher than May at Blues, so a transfer away from the Second City is probably ideal for the 32-year-old.
Blues are targeting back-to-back promotions after blasting through League One with 111 points, and have signed seven more players in the opening two weeks of the transfer season to help their bid for Premier League status.
“It’s a huge challenge, this league we’re in now,” Davies told BirminghamLive following the Blues’ 1-0 friendly defeat to Burton Albion on Saturday. “We need all the quality we can get.”
Blues’ surge of additions necessitates some outgoings to keep the ship stable, and May has been considered surplus-to-requirements.
May appeared when a second-string Blues team was trounced 4-0 by Crewe Alexandra in a pre-season friendly over the weekend, highlighting Davies’ feelings about the former League One golden boot winner.

May has been prolific in the third tier over the last four seasons, scoring 81 goals in total – excluding the one controversially attributed to him following Ben Davies’ strike against Barnsley. He has yet to experience life in the Championship and will now hope that the Terriers can earn promotion this season, giving him the second-tier opportunity he has long sought.
Unfortunately for May, that opportunity did not occur at St. Andrew’s.
