Ally McCoist Claimed ‘Ridiculous’ 8-Cap England Ace Was ‘Up There’ With Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi is widely considered one of the greatest footballers of all time – and for good reason.
A magician with the ball at his feet, the Argentine has dazzled fans for nearly two decades with his extraordinary dribbling and creativity. Even beyond his playmaking genius, Messi has also built a staggering catalogue of goals that defies imagination.
He has recorded over 800 senior goals, ranking as the all-time top scorer for both Barcelona and Argentina. But alongside being a great goalscorer, Messi was truly a scorer of great goals, whether it be inside the box or far outside.
So when Ally McCoist – one of Scotland’s greatest-ever strikers and Rangers’ all-time leading goalscorer – once claimed there was another player as good a goalscorer as Messi, it naturally raised a few eyebrows.
A product of the Southampton youth academy, Matt Le Tissier is among the greatest one-club men to have ever graced the Premier League. He spent all 16 of his playing years with the Saints and is firmly regarded as a legend for the south coast side.
What keeps Le Tissier in the memory of long-time Premier League fans is his remarkable selection of goals. He scored plenty, but a significant portion were show-stopping displays of pure brilliance. Speaking to talkSPORT, McCoist waxed lyrical about this particular quality of the Guernsey-born man.
“Le Tiss? Ridiculous, ridiculous.”
“I think he is up there with the likes of [Lionel] Messi in terms of great goals. In terms of a scorer of absolutely top-class, great goals, Le Tissier has to up there with anybody! Anybody!”
“In terms of scoring great goals, goals that make you go wow, he’s up there with anybody!”
Messi stunned spectators time and time again with his extraordinary work, but Le Tissier was not too indifferent. His long-distance screamer against Blackburn Rovers in 1995 won that season’s goal of the month, and it immediately springs to mind as an example of what this man was capable of.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Matt Le Tissier was the first midfielder in Premier League history to score 100 goals in the competition.
Ultimately, that was just one of his many headline-grabbing strikes. Be it a long-range shot from outside the box, or a weaving run through a defence to manufacture an opportunity from anything, Le Tissier had variety in addition to immense quality.
Despite having an array of spectacular finishes to choose from, Le Tissier revealed in an interview with Football’s Greatest that his personal favourite was in fact an 88th-minute winner to see off Arsenal in 2001.
Of course, that was an excellent effort regardless, as was custom for Le Tissier, but the occasion itself held immense value.
“My favourite goal, because of the situation because of the fact that it was the last-ever game at The Dell, I was the last-ever person to score a last-ever league goal at The Dell, that winning goal against Arsenal in the 88th minute in the last-ever game at The Dell, I couldn’t have written a better script to finish my playing career at The Dell.”
