Callum Wilson, the former striker for Coventry City, has announced his resignation from Newcastle United, acknowledging that “all good things come to an end.”
After failing to agree on a new contract, the former Sky Blues academy graduate, who later became an England international, left St. James’ Park last week when his contract expired.
In a statement, Wilson, who made 130 games for the North East team and scored 49 goals, thanked the supporters.
“After an incredible few years at the Toon, it’s time to say goodbye to all you Magpies,” the 33-year-old striker from Coventry stated.
“Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.”
“I appreciate all you’ve done. To assist the club reach new heights, we remained united through the highs and lows.
Wilson has options in Major League Soccer and has reportedly attracted attention from many Premier League clubs.
Wilson scored 23 goals in 53 appearances while playing for the Sky Blues under then-manager Steven Pressley, earning a £3 million transfer to Bournemouth in the summer of 2014. After spending five years on Tyneside due to injuries, the Cherries sold him to Newcastle in 2020 for around £20 million.
He only made eighteen Premier League games last season due to back and hamstring issues.
Wilson continued, “I am really honoured to have worn the famous number nine shirt and to have given it a little more history.”
“As they say, scoring at the Gallowgate End is quite unique.
“Every good thing comes to an end, but Newcastle United will always hold a special place in my family’s and my hearts.”
