Aston Villa confident they’ll keep £80m star as Tottenham change targets.
According to insiders who spoke to TEAMtalk, Aston Villa believes they have successfully dissuaded rival teams like Tottenham Hotspur from submitting a last-minute proposal for star player Morgan Rogers.
In recent weeks, Chelsea and Arsenal have also expressed interest in the 23-year-old, who Tottenham was seriously considering pursuing. However, Villa’s inability to be flexible with their valuation of over £80 million has made Spurs reconsider whether to formally express their interest.
Instead, Tottenham switched focus last night amid a potential move for Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, who is keen on returning to the Premier League.
Spurs are pondering an offer but have not committed while they also weigh up other ideas for the attack.
Atalanta has authorised Spurs to acquire Lookman, and the two additional forwards they are considering have been verified by sources.
Villa has been steadfast in his opposition to Rogers throughout the summer. According to sources who spoke to TEAMtalk, the Midlands club always thought that their tenacity would eventually dissuade bidders, and they now feel that they have remained strong enough to move on.
According to market estimates, Rogers is worth between £80 and £100 million, making him a key component of Villa’s proposal.
While the club were wary of one final test of their resolve in the closing hours of the window, the expectation is now that he will remain at Villa Park beyond deadline day.
Villa are protected by Rogers’ contract, which runs for another five years.
Clubs forced to move on from Morgan Rogers
Chelsea have long been fans of the six-cap England international but have since signed Joao Pedro and agreed a deal with Brighton & Hove Albion for Facundo Buonanotte instead.
Spurs have already brought in Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig, beating Chelsea to his capture, while Arsenal won the race for Eberechi Eze.
Villa thinks they can keep Rogers, but there is a lot of uncertainty about goalie Emi Martinez’s future.
Martinez is eager to become Manchester United’s new number one and has reached a personal agreement with them.
Both the Argentine World Cup champion and Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp are being courted by United.
Jadon Sancho, who is set to sign a season-long loan with Villa, is unrelated to United’s possible acquisition of Martinez.
