Barnsley plotting Bolton Wanderers transfer raid already

Barnsley is already planning a transfer attack against Bolton Wanderers.

As the transfer window came to an end last Monday, a number of deals that were in the works ultimately fell through, and regrettably, it appears that Barnsley was not an exception to the erratic nature of the window’s last day.

Journalist Alan Nixon claims on his Patreon page that the Tykes’ deadline-day attempt to sign Bolton’s Forrester was unsuccessful because the two teams were unable to reach a permanent agreement. Nixon has said that the Yorkshire team is still interested in the 24-year-old defensive player and will try to sign him when the transfer window reopens in January. In order to fill the vacancy until January, when they are rumoured to reevaluate a deal to purchase Forrester, Barnsley instead decided to take Derby County teenager Jake Rooney on loan.

After suffering a hamstring injury in April and missing Wanderers’ preseason campaign, Forrester has had a challenging start to the season and has yet to play for Bolton in any tournament. Earlier in the summer, as the Hatters prepared to lose Ethan Pye, the defender was linked to a move to Stockport County. However, this never materialised, and Forrester remained at Bolton. Nixon has disclosed that the 24-year-old did have the opportunity to leave on the day of the deadline, as Barnsley made a persistent attempt to bring him to Oakwell.

Despite this, the trade apparently failed because the two clubs couldn’t agree on a permanent sale, leaving Forrester stranded at Bolton until at least January. Thankfully, Nixon has also hinted that the Tykes are still interested in acquiring him, so a move to Yorkshire might still be possible in the upcoming transfer window. The former Port Vale player has struggled to get regular playing time with the Trotters in recent years, so it could be best for everyone if he had the chance to go and play somewhere else.

Forrester had returned to some of his finest form under new head coach Steven Schumacher prior to hurting his hamstring last season, but he had missed all of Bolton’s preseason and domestic games so far. It might take some time for the 24-year-old to make a comeback because Chris Forino, George Johnston, and Richard Taylor are all further up in the hierarchy and there are a lot of new players joining the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

This implies that Forrester would be eager to move somewhere where he can get regular playing time and advance his career if minutes are scarce in the first half of the season. The move may depend on how involved the centre-back is over the next four months, as Barnsley is apparently still interested in bringing him to Oakwell. If he establishes himself as a vital member of the team, Bolton is less likely to sell.
