Sheffield Wednesday are believed to have settled up amounts owed to many players and staff today, as they had suggested yesterday.
The Star reported on Monday that the Owls had communicated that salaries will be on their way as a result of costs paid to the club as part of a transfer fee, with a handful of players receiving their money last night. This publication learns that the most, if not all, of the players who handed in their notice under 14bis of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players have now been paid, 15 days later.
Sheffield Wednesday are paying people – finally
This includes both players currently contracted for next season and those owed money following their departures, and it is hoped that the EFL will immediately lift the ban on outstanding salaries. The embargoes on overdue HMRC payments and money owing to other clubs will last until they are resolved.
In addition to the news about the players, Radio Sheffield has reported that non-playing staff are in the process of being paid, which will come as a big relief to those who have gone without for several weeks.
What happens next remains to be seen, and while this update certainly qualifies as ‘good news’, there is another payday coming up in a couple of weeks, and all eyes will be on that given that Wednesday’s near future is uncertain.
