Birmingham City confirm transfer deal involving ‘skilled and fast’ winger

Birmingham City confirm transfer deal involving ‘skilled and fast’ winger.

The latest Birmingham City transfer news from BirminghamLive, as the Blues complete the transfer of Ayumu Yokoyama.

Ayumu Yokoyama has departed Birmingham City after only one season with the club. The winger has joined KRC Genk for an undisclosed amount, barely 11 months after joining Blues from Japanese club Sagan Tosu.

He’s signed a four-year contract. Indeed, the 22-year-old barely lasted half a season at St Andrew’s before Chris Davies transferred the young but gifted wide-man to KRC Genk’s B team Jong Genk, where he played nine games and scored one.

Prior to then, he made 19 appearances for Blues but did not start a League One game because Davies preferred more defensively sound options on the wing. Nonetheless, Yokoyama showed flashes of his talent with three goals in the club’s run to the final of the Vertu Trophy.

Ayumu Yokoyama, a Birmingham City winger, has completed a permanent transfer to KRC Genk for an undisclosed amount, according to a statement posted on the club’s website. “The 22-year-old played the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan with the Belgian Pro League team, who finished first in the regular season and third in the Championship Round.

“Yokoyama joined the Blues from Sagan Tosu in the summer of 2024, playing 19 games in all competitions and scoring four goals. Everyone at the Club wishes Ayumu continued success in the future. Yokoyama’s last Blues appearance came from the bench on January 18 in a 1-0 victory over Exeter.

A few weeks later, Davies loaned him to the Belgian club and was never confident of his capacity to adjust, saying in December, “Ayumu has just got to keep going.” He’s a talented young player who is still adjusting to English football, and he’ll play a role this season.”

He was eventually released a month later, and Genk now has Yokoyama permanently after signing him on loan at first. Their Head of Football, Dimitri de Condé, stated:

“Ayumu had time last season to adjust to our method of working and the local culture. He is technically proficient, speedy, and, most importantly, capable of scoring goals. We are confident in his future development and forward to see him play for the first squad.”
