Birmingham City eye relegated defender along with Sunderland and Burnley

Birmingham City, Sunderland, and Burnley are interested in the demoted defender.

After Luton Town was relegated from the second division, Mengi, 23, faces an unclear future there. Since 2023, he has been registered at Kenilworth Road.

According to the most recent information available, EFL Analysis states that he is a wanted man throughout this time frame. The Blues, Sunderland, Burnley, and Middlesbrough are all vying for his services.

“I’d been at Manchester United since I was six and been there all my life; I’ve seen people come and go and I was the last of my age group to leave,” he said on their website after joining the Hatters a few years ago. Although leaving United is bittersweet, this is an exciting time.

“I simply had to ask myself what would be best for me and be honest with myself. Either stay and battle United, or move elsewhere and seek out a chance. I ultimately chose that course of action because I was honest with myself.

Mengi might be considered by Birmingham City as a way to strengthen their defense. In terms of hiring, BCFC is anticipated to be very busy over the coming months.

The former England young player advanced via Manchester United’s development system. At several different youth levels, he was a consistent for the top league giants.

He later made two appearances for the Red Devils’ first team. In order to gain experience, the Manchester native was also loaned out from Old Trafford to Derby County and Birmingham City.

He was permanently acquired by Luton Town, and he has since had a lot of playing time in Bedfordshire. But throughout his tenure, they have fallen to two relegations.

Whether Birmingham City decides to formally contact Luton Town for Mengi remains to be seen. He will already be well-known at BCFC after his initial stint there.

In this pursuit, the Blues might also have to defeat rivals from other areas. He might be offered top level football by Burnley and Sunderland, and Middlesbrough is reportedly also a possibility.

Twelve months ago, Chris Davies was named St Andrew’s head coach. He was the number two for teams like Celtic, Leicester City, and Tottenham Hotspur before moving to the Midlands, and he has performed admirably thus far.
